Not to get ahead of ourselves, but the Bengals really should be getting some solid comp picks for the draft this year. It's a long way off and the playoffs are the ultimate focus, but one can get excited about these extra picks.
Veteran Additions: RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, G Travelle Wharton, DE Jamaal Anderson, CB Jason Allen, CB Terence Newman. Offseason Losses: RB Cedric Benson, WR Jerome Simpson, WR Andre Caldwell, G Bobbie Williams, G Nate Livings, DE/DT Jonathan Fanene, DE Frostee Rucker, OLB Brandon Johnson, CB Kelly Jennings, OG McGlynn Green-Ellis was our only notable addition and Newman was cut so that won't factor in. Wharton, Anderson, and Allen have all been busts that we have signed, and we lost 9 free agents to other teams. Based on the production standpoint and the amount of players we lost and the contracts those players received, we should be due at least a couple picks. Benson will not get us a pick; only 250 yards this year. Simpson is a starter, but he isn't making that much and only has 235 yards. Caldwell has one catch on the year so nothing there. Bobbie Williams may very well net us a 5th round comp pick. He has played in 12 games and started 5 for the Ravens while signing a 2 year deal. Livings will net us a 3rd round comp pick in my opinion. He has started in 15 games and signed a 4 for 20 deal in the offseason. Fanene was cut so nothing there. Frostee Rucker signed a 5 year, 20 million deal and has 45 tackles and 4 sacks. Looks like a 4th round comp to me. The only other player who will net us another pick is Mike McGlynn. He signed a 2 year deal and is starting at center for the Colts. So the haul from these players is an extra 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 5th I think, which could be huge. WHO DEY! |

NFL is very unpredictable on this. Also could see us getting no picks.

I think Wharton and Newman were both cut by their former teams so they won't count against us.
I doubt we get all those picks you listed though. We didn't lose anyone who would warrant a 3rd rounder in my opinion. |

I was tracking gains and losses in the off season, and I think we get one in 5 or later.

Lost 9 - Livings, Bobbie Williams, Benson, Rucker, Fanene, McGlynn, Simpson, Caldwell, Brandon Johnson. Signed 3 - BJGE, Jason Allen, Jamaal Anderson. (Faine, Newman, Wharton, Josh Brown, Gilberry & Richard Quinn were cut and don't count.) If this is the case, then the Bengals should get 6 compensatory picks. Does anyone else see this differently? Is there a 10 year veteran exclusion? I believe that would only impact Bobbie Williams. |

For the amount of playing time that Nate Livings and Bobbie Williams has had we might get around a 4-5th round pick.

Fanene - 3 year/$9.85 million with $2.283 million in 2012 Simpson - 1 year - $2,000,000 Andre Caldwell - 2 year $1,800,000 Benson - 1 year/$825k Brandon Johnson - 1 year $700k Perhaps, Benson & Johnson wouldn't count for much. But I would have to think that Fanene, Simpson, & Caldwell would be considered, correct? |

Does it matter if Fanene was put on IR? I don't think so. Perhaps with playing time, but regardless, he got the contract. I think that we should get something for Fanene as well. http://www.raiders.com/news/article-...b-38830ec6140c At most, a team can get 4 comp. picks. I am thinking that the Bengals should at least get 2 if not 3 comp picks. |

The Devil is in the details. Allen received an $800k signing bonus. In the 2nd and final year of the contract, Allen has a $700k roster bonus and a $3 million base. If the Bengals cut Jason Allen prior to the NFL year, then the Bengals would only take a $400k hit to the salary cap. Though Allen's 2012 participation was very, very frustrating, I think that this was a well-structured deal initially as an insurance policy if Pacman didn't re-sign in 2012. And in addition, if something goes wrong in 2013 (Pacman, Newman don't extend), then Allen could be a necessary player in 2013. Last edited by mulligan; 01-01-2013 at 10:30 AM. |

Agreed. As futile as draft prediction are, guessing at comp picks is a complete waste of time. Even the people who assign them do not understand the 'formula.'
