I'm having my first child! - Cincinnati Bengals Message Boards

As many of you know, I recently got married to an amazing specimen of a woman. We had been dating for 6 years, and engaged for 2 before we finally tied the knot. So, right after the marriage is all done, she tells me that she wants to have a kid. I was on board with the idea from the beginning.

Soooooo....about a month and a half ago, she told me that we were expecting our first child! I'm pretty excited about it. I wanted to post this a while ago, but I didn't want to jump the gun just in case something bad happened early on in the pregnancy. I come from a rather large family (oldest of 6 children), so I have a decent amount of experience around kids, but I'm still here to request some pointers. I know nothing about being a father....only a bunch about being a big brother, and seeing as how a lot of you have children, I was thinking that you may be able to tell me some things to do and not do along the way.

Also....I'm not a complete idiot like I portray myself to be on these message boards. I just like having a bit of fun with you fools.

Anyway, this should be fun!

It's human nature to have OCD, however slight, and shape and form the world around them to their liking.

The hardest thing you will ever do as a parent is to let your child become themselves, instead of you shaping them.

I'm not saying guidance is unnecessary, but that balance between guiding and letting them grow into a beautiful person, is a balance you should analyze every single day and strive to do.

I've gotten a lot of these kinds of answers from my family and friends. They say to let the child gain some independence from the very beginning, but still be a positive presence in their life.

I intend on letting my child develop as it's own person rather than a little version of myself. Of course there are aspects of me (and my wife) that I hope get passed down and I will encourage it.

That's awesome! I love my little boy more than anything in this world. Being a parent is more work than you can possibly imagine, but its so worth it.

I thought Russia suspended gay couple adoptions this past week. How did you manage to get around that?

Seriously, congratulations. Your life is about to change. Things are going to become more difficult and the stress is going to go through the roof, but it's all worth it when you come home from work and your child runs up to you welcome you home or when they say "I love you"........whenever.

Congrats señor! Great news. Life is certainly gonna change for ya. Here are a few of my tips.

Pre arrival:
Back rubs for mommy when she wants them.
Talk to your baby. Sounds crazy, but when my son was born, he quieted down as soon as he heard my voice. Nurses said it was because he knew my voice.
Enjoy the freedom you have now, like seeing a movie on a whim.
Post arrival:
Change diapers
Help with feeding, mom needs some sleep too.
Make time for each other.

Agreed, Prepare the child for the path not the path for the child.

Also parents shouldn't try to live through or fulfill something from their life with a kid.

I don't know about the gay adoptions, but I know they've banned all adoptions to American parents. Lame. This just means those poor children actually have to live in Russia.
