We all know it's a need and from my perspective this year's class looks really solid. Particularly solid late first through the third which is right in the Bengals wheel house. Every year, we talk about taking a safety in the first couple rounds but it never seems to play out that way. I think that changes this year. Who do you like and why?
For me, right now I love the thought of drafting this guy in early two if he's there. Matt Elam. Might have to take him in late first. Instinctive and a playmaker. Also can be a little overzealous as a hitter but I like that about him. I think he starts immediately. Also like Bacari Rambo and TJ Macdonald as potential 3rd rounders. Both big, physical athletes that can play the pass.

If we can move Nelson to SS, and let Rambo play FS, I think that would make us pretty solid.
There are a couple of other middle round (4th 0r 5th?) SS's I'd be interested in as well – Shamarko Thomas (Syracuse) and Cody Davis (Texas Tech). I have no idea how Iloka or Tony Dye will pan out, and we have to think in terms of depth. Otherwise, I like Elam, Rambo, Shawn Williams, & Tony Jefferson. I'm not sold on Lester or Vaccaro.

I'm a big Matt Elam fan as well and he is hands down the best SS in the draft. Unfortunately, I've gotten my hopes up over the last few years hoping we'd take a safety early and we never do.
This year seems very deep (especially FS): Reid Vaccaro McDonald Jefferson Rambo |

Gotta grab a safety with one of the first 2 picks if a good one is there and no crazy slides happen. When was the last time we picked a safety high? the last 2 years its been late rounders.

I want Rambo. Arguably the best safety that was going to come out last year, but he stayed another year. Yes, some flags, but talent is there.
He is a ball-hawk. He creates turn-overs, something that would add another dimension to this defense. Just think about all the dropped INTs this year, there's been a lot. Rambo is good with intercepting passes. Also, I'm not worried about the character issues. Why? Because, well, if you look into it, it's not bad. Just he hung out with the wrong people. Also, he is really good friends with AJ Green(not sure if best friends). They were also roommates and talk a lot. I think Green would be a great role model for him. Rambo would be great on Zimmer's defense. And he is versatile to play either safety position.

Elam is not good in Coverage at all. I live down here and see them a lot.
But We seem to like the thicker SS. And are we closing the door on Sands and Illoka as well? I am sure we will have a few we like and will take them accordingly. Hard to argue with their drafting lately.

Tony Jefferson is my favorite safety this draft. Great coverage skills and amazing instincts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJmLVe2l3MQ A few of his highlights ^^^ edit: Here's what NEPatriotsDraft had to say about him: "If Tony Jefferson was 6’2″, he would be in talks as a top fifteen pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. At 5’11″, he is still a phenomenal safety prospect that really grew up from his 2011 season – both his body and his game." Last edited by ibengals; 12-31-2012 at 05:45 AM. |

You will get a great chance at scouting Elam in the Sugar Bowl Wednesday. My Cardinals will be hard pressed in the trenches against Florida and this may ultimately cost them.
But where UofL excels is at QB and a slew of good WR's that will be testing their DB's all day long. Go Bengals & Go Cards ! Sugar Bowl Champions ! L-Yeah !

I like Vaccaro in the 1st and Elam in the second. A whole slew of guys in the third.

Also would love the idea of purchasing FA safety Jairus Byrd from "Buffalo"

Byrd would be ideal but I think he'll either get the Franchise tag or command top $ in free agency. I think the Safety class lacks a real star this year but is pretty deep with good prospects that we could pick up with one of our second rounders or the third rounder.

Man, I gotta admit. I'm starting to like Elam more and more if Vaccaro is gone. Elam can hit, but also has as much speed, if not better, than the other safeties.

Elam is very quick to close which I like. I know Vaccaro is rated high but I've never come away overly impressed with him. Texas has produced some pretty good DB's, though. I remember a couple years ago how badly I coveted Earl Thomas...then he began to rise up the boards.

Swearinger or Rambo by a land slide. Vacarro, Elam, McDonald's, etc can all come later

We had to bring back Crocker for a reason. Nelson has been a good player, but for what ever reason, does not have what it takes to run the DBs and play at a high level.
