The Steelers are 10 million over the cap right now.

The Bengals are 50 million under.

One team made the playoffs, one team didn't. Not too shabby.

More bothered about what that means for next season now. Hopefully it'll mean we can re-sign all of our important upcoming FA's and hopefully bring in some help, while the Steelers cap cripples them somewhat. It's about more than money, but having that cap situation obviously rides in our favour.

You're in a good spot Bengals, go prove you can make the most of it.

In a vacuum, yes. However both of them didn't win a superbowl this year and one has a better draft position because of it. That said, I totally agree teams need to build through the draft which is what we are doing, and kudos to the team for doing it, however there does come a time when Free Agency is needed, and it was sorely needed this year with no defining #2 WR.

I think spending a few million of that cap space to take the heat off A.J. would of been money well spent instead of hoping Sanu and Jones could do what they are not ready to do yet. Hindsight is 20/20 but this was an issue I think everyone was well aware of prior to the start of the season.

I agree with this. I'd welcome a Safety or WR in Free Agency. Just wanted to be a little optimistic. And I'm hoping that this starts our incline and the steelers decline.

Im usually against FA splashes.

But I say go after a #2 in FA.
We need a guy ready to go now.

S on the other hand will most likely be a draft pick.
Not many worth while safeties hit the market unless they are old or injury prone.
Its a relative cheap position and when teams get their guys they can lock them up cheap.

G is a position that I think we could use another pick at but also you have to see how last years FA comes back from injury. Cant jettison a guy till you see what you have.

So really get the best fish in FA you can at WR and maybe watch for a Bengals type player(cap casualty) at LB or S

Go young at RB and CB in the draft.

The Steelers have made the playoffs 2 years and missed them the 3rd every cycle since moving to Heinz field.

Roethlisberger has also never had a losing season.

I wasn't saying that it was stupid to spend money. Look at all my posts during Free Agency. I lose my mind when we don't go after anyone. I was just pointing out that we're ahead of the curve with a lot of money available going into the first year MB HAS to spend something.

And the Steelers don't spend money in the way you are referring to. They've drafted well and retained their own guys, They rarely pick up big names from other teams. They haven't drafted well lately. This is why their injuries have caught up to them. They used to be able to groom players until they're ready. You can't do that when your drafts are terrible. We had a lot of injuries too. And yes citing 6 SB's is living in the past. 4 of them were decades ago.

Then you should have worded that differently as your post was suggesting because the steelers are over the cap this year and we are under and we did better than them,,that means spending more not only not helps but makes things worse.

Im not saying empty out the bank,,,but for God sake when you got that much left to spend, go get some proven talent to help out quickly.

That is not living in the past,,that is using history to show a point,,and point is their organization is ran better than ours.

Yes they draft well which is why they dont usually have to bring in top name FAs,,,they also COACH WELL which is why they can coach these draft picks up to par,,,we on the other hand are hit or miss,,,unless we draft someone like AJ who is naturally just a beast, more times than not we cant coach them up.

We have to have a proven vet #2WR that can take the field from day one and contribute. We don't need another experiment. Sanu, Jones, and Hawk are fine for 3 - 5 and slot but we need some experience out there to take the heat off AJ.

Mike Brown will then claim we are "near the cap" and not sign any impact free agents this off season.

Cannot extend Green and Dalton till next offseason at the earliest.
CBA rules.

New setup is for the vested veterans to get paid more and more often.
So if we have to spend I forsee way more shorter contracts so you have more guys going out each year to free up money as your young guys all come into the 3rd year.

I would say history clearly shows that things change. Lotta people took a lot longer than a lot of other people to finally realize/admit the earth was not flat.
