IDK, the guy's gonna be 25 in a couple weeks. He's likely as athletically big as he's gonna get. A lot of times when someone purposely tries to add weight to their body, quickness and agility suffer.

This is of topic a little but I just had a thought about the scouting staff and their recent luck with udfa's at the position.
This is could be way off base but they may not even take a LB early in this draft. They probably should but the teams recent luck with drafting LB's early hasn't been that good of late.
They may surprise all of us and get some hungry young LB's late or even udfa's again.

This discussion is something that already has a lot of time and pages dedicated to it. With it being a new season I wanted to reopen the discussion.
I didn't hate on anyone that disagreed because they did it in a respectful manner.

I don't necessarily disagree about Moch. But at this point, we can't really tell because the guy can't stay healthy enough to get on the field. It's looking like he's gonna be a washout.

Injuries have derailed Marvin's experiments (Pollack/Moch). Mays has to be tried somewhere. He's similar in size to LaVonte David, and has obvious cover issues. He would've been an ideal safety in the Lott/ Steve Atwater era, but not now. Try him out at LB, on special teams as a kick-blocker and gunner, etc...

Not sure what his current size is but most of us have seen the picture of him and USC's LBer cops from a few years back.
It's not like the team is getting a lot of production from him at S and the move could give the team some speed and athleticism at the position.

We do not always agree but on this we do. I have stated the very same thing. I think he is (no pun intended) tailor made for WLB.

To expand .....our LBs have been relatively weak in coverage of TEs and backs. The coverage problems of Mays exists in one on one coverage of WRs in space. He has shown the ability to cover TEs very well as evidenced by his coverage of Daniels last season. What killed us coverage wise in this playoff game? Underneath coverage by our LBs on Daniels. We already know Mays can be very good supporting the run.

My plan for 2013 LBs would be:

Burfict to the middle. Has shown natural instincts and decent in coverage. Has fire and has shown to be a young leader.

Howard re-signed and transitioned to SLB. He is a good 3 down LB and has shown the physical skills for the position. He is a very good LB in coverage.

WLB - Transition Mays and continue to develop Lamur.

Justin Durant - I would pursue him in FA as an insurance policy to Howard because of the injury and if both are healthy a camp battle as starter.

will they do with Taylor Mays? I would love to see them turn him into a LB he has the size and would be the fastest LB in the league. Just think of the TE's that would be shut down. We traded for him so he isn't going anywere for a bit. What should be done with him?

Why on earth would you want a rookie, a 2nd year pro, and a guy that has never played LB at a competitive level as your stating LB set???

Better would be to think of drafting Ogletree (to groom on the bench for a year), moving Burfict to the middle, re-signing Thomas Howard, and picking up a serious vet in FA, like Daryl Smith.

Seriously though, I'm ok with turning him into a LBer as long as its on a project basis where he isn't expected to contribute at the LBer position this year.

This team is close to being very good so there is no reason to go into the season with a S starting at LBer.
