If it came down to your ability to re-sign Michael Johnson or signing Dashon Goldson as a FA Safety, which would you choose?
Personally, I would like to see a DE drafted with the 21st pick, re-sign Gilberry for rotation, and solidify the back end of the defense with an experienced safety like Goldson. Please note this thread did not in any way ask if the Brown family would pony up any money, blah, blah, blah....reserve those discussions for whiny little bytch threads that are easy to ignore.

I don't know how good Goldson would be on a different team.

There are about 5 good safeties in the league. There are tons of good DEs
I would pick MJ though

Do you not feel Goldson is a top 5 safety? For the record, I like MJ, but I feel what this team really needs is a playmaking SS.

Excellent point, but SF saw him as valuable enough to use the franchise tag on him. I love his speed and toughness in stuffing the run and covering TEs, but I think his ability in pass defense makes him elite. I just don't think rookie safeties can make an impact in year one as a defensive end could. I want a veteran SS to pair with Reggie Nelson and help bring along Dre Kirkpatrick.

I do think Goldson is one of the better safeties in the league. However, if MJ still progresses like he should, the team can continue building upon the best part of the team. Keep your strengths a strength while solidifying everything else. Safeties are not the most important part of a team (Or else every team would have one, not just the 49ers). If you have a safety who just plays intelligently, your defense can still operate very well with the previously mentioned pass rush

Re: Which would you rather have?
Easy, Michael Johnson.. with him, we know the Bengals have a top 10 defense. It's been a proven commodity the last two years. Take away that pass rush, add a safety, and who knows what you have. I'll take #6 or #7 defense and #2 in sacks every single year.

Eric Ried, S 37. Jamar Taylor, CB 53. Travis Frederick, C 84. Jamie Collins, OLB 115. Montee Ball, RB Man... FA has really made me edit the crap out of my Wishlist/Draft... and not really for the better. |

In a perfect world, they could get them both. In the salary cap era of the NFL, I think a guy like Goldson could provide a huge lift on the defensive side of the ball and tough decisions will have to be made to make it all work.

I would take Earl Thomas, Jairus Byrd, Eric Berry, Louis Delmas, and Eric Weddle before Goldson.

Them (At this point). Speaking of, I was using slight hyperbole, although my point is safety play in the league is generally terrible, while DE play is pretty damn good

Eric Berry had a fantastic rookie season, but tore his ACL in his second season, I don't know how he play this year but if it was poor, it might have something to do with that ACL injury
