No way. He doesn't have that much ability to warrant the pick with so much baggage. He would need to transition to safety, and he's not very good otherwise. Just aggressive

Tyrann Mathieu is Cortland Finnegan with return skills.

No he isn't a top corner, that is beyond ridiculous. But to say he is just a primary punt returner is even more ridiculous.

Re: Draft Tyrann Mathieu in the 3rd round
Ok so he is not a top corner as admitted by you yet he would be worthy of a 3rd selection? I mean you started this discussion by basically stating that it would not be a wasted selection. Now you admit he is not a top CB so what would be the merits of using a 3rd round selection on him other than return ability?

Tyrann is a borderline NFL DB that has outstanding return skills. The two situations don't even compare. |

If you want a return man, just draft Ace Sanders in the third...and wait and see on H.Badger

You don't make any sense. Was Dontay Moch a top OLB in the draft? How about Jordan Shipley, was he a top WR? I don't understand your coloration between a top CB and Mathieu where I said I would take him in the 3rd. Please help me understand TimmyW.

Why? Janoris Jenkins was a very very good corner. Tyrannn Mathieu is very average, but a very good returner. A 3rd is not the time to take a flyer on a kick returner that is an average corner. Someone may take a shot early at him but we don't need to.

I have a feeling this kid will be a steal for somebody and I hope it's us. He might even be available in the 4th.

Mathieu is not just a return man.HBes one of the top cover guys out thbere. His only down falls are his height and off the field issues and not his cover skills.

As a pure cover guy, maybe. He makes a ton of big plays though (returns, turnovers, etc) and this league has room for anybody who can make big plays on a consistent basis.

except he always goes for the strip which leads to missed or broken tackles. Like I said he got a cool nick name and everyone fell in love with him. When you watch him play he trys to jump every route. He will get killed with double moves and by good QBs who know what he is going to do. Like I said he is not worth a 3rd, but someone will take him.

If the draft had an 8th round I'd take him there.

Would love to have him in Cincy. 3rd seems a little high though.

If we could get him in the 4-5 range I would call it a steal. His interviews at the combine will be huge but the talent can't really be denied. He won't come in and be a Revis type of corner but he has instincts and a nose for the ball that can't be coached. Thats where his value is.

Just because Mathieu forced a bunch of fumbles at the college level doesn't make me change my mind about how he projects as a pro. He is short, didn't cover that well in college and is not a good projection to safety. |

Jenkins was the best cover corner in the draft. Mathieu is good, but I'm not sure he's a first rounder even without his problems. Nickel back at best if you ask me.

He could be a nickel back with us; primary return man. Third? No way...
He could be best in a talented, assignment based defense where he was the person that could roam and create havoc--much like he did at LSU. Thank goodness Pittsburgh has a zero tolerance policy for these types of characters. I just can't see him having the defensive success he did at LSU translate to the NFL, unless his counterparts were super solid. There are few teams that have a defensive backfield he would work in, given the proliferation for the pass. All that said, I wouldn't hesitate to throw a fifth at him.
