The former Oakland Raiders quarterback, who hasn't taken a single NFL snap since 2009, told Yahoo! Sports he's dropped from 320 pounds to 308 pounds and is ready to bury past criticisms.

"The last few years, the things going through my life, football is my job and it is how it feeds my family," he said. "People would say (that) I didn't love the game but that ****** me off. People don't know the real you but I want people to know the real me and see what I can do. People are always saying that I'm a bust. I want show them I'm not. I'm committed to this now."

According to the report, Russell will work out with a bevy of former NFL players, including NFL Network's Marshall Faulk, ex-quarterback Jeff Garcia and former Olympic track star Ato Boldon.

Russell's three seasons in Oakland were so disastrous he's been called the greatest bust of all time and the Raiders refused to give his No. 2 to Terrelle Pryor in 2011 when the rookie quarterback requested the number. Before being cut in 2010, Russell was replaced by Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, then the Raiders traded for Jason Campbell to take his place.

The 27-year-old hasn't sniffed the NFL since getting tryouts with the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins in 2010, after he was arrested for possessing codeine syrup without a prescription. But he says he's ready to change the perception.

"I'm not looking for a pat on the shoulder from people who haven't been there for me," Russell said. "It feels funny not to go through a training camp, that's just what I'm used to. It's going to feel good to go back out there again. I will make this happen."

His biggest challenge will be to convince a team to give him a chance.

Got this off NFL.com. what is the likelyhood that he actually makes onto a team as a back-up much less a starter? i think the CFL is where he should go if they would even take him.

No he needs to go spend some time on the Treadmill. Hes not even good enough for the CFL or Arena League or the UFL all of those also require that you be in shape.

Russell hasnt been in the league since 2009 really. he tried out for some teams in 2010 but no one wanted him. what makes you think that he will be better than dalton when russell hasnt even had a wnning season.

If we cut dalton because of failure? Which i expect we wont after he leads the bengals to 3 playoff appearences in a row.

But even then I dont see how replacing him with one of the Biggest Bust of all time will do anything but take this team 4 to 5 steps backwards.

Ok guys read everything before you come to a prejudgment about this .

First off who seen the ESPN story last night about the Russel comeback attempt ?

I sat and watched the entire piece and have an opinion that the guy deserves a second shot . There were some things explained that i never knew about . Basically to make a long story short it discussed that how his Uncle had died that was living with him as well as a second uncle that had passed . This uncle was basically his father figure in his life . After all this happened he was pretty much just lost inside .

Now mix that in with being drafted by the raiders of all teams . His rookie year he only played in the last two games . His freshman year was just horrible . Remind you tho it was the mess that was the Raiders at the time . His second year was a total disaster . He was the worst QB in the league . It was his first year as a full time starter tho .

His third and final year before the season had started was when everything had happened to his uncles . He came in totally over weight and had no care at all about football . He was let go and no other team wanted him . He was in football exile .

NOW .. The piece says his mom asked him shorty after the drug charges what he wanted to do with his life . And he wanted to play football . He said yes . I honestly thought this was all about the money . But i truly believe he loves the game and misses it . So he decided to reach out to Jeff Garcia and ask for help .

Garcia had a lot of positive things to say about him . That he was working very hard and had already lost 40 pounds . And he sees a willingness to learn that he didnt have before . He also thinks that Russell can be a NFL QB .

So i said all this for my main purpose of the post . I want us to sign the guy . The guy has all the talent . He just needs the head and heart . I was not very impressed with the guy for a long time to be honest . I was all for a second chance here . But now after i watched that i really think he can be a very productive player . Not saying bench Dalton . But a in shape clear headed Russell would be the best backup in the league today .
