Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State: Came out too early, plain and simple. You have to wonder about his character and maturity. This may be a case of a guy who is a legend in his own mind. I mean, he didn't even start at Penn State for a full season. He ran a poor 40 at the combine and could be in for a big fall...

Seriously, if you don't curb your expectations you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Maybin was NEVER a complete player, and most sites projected him as a 1st round bust. You'd be much better off just accepting him for what he is and being happy.

Folks are silly. Like I told Momadance: "You can't win this arguement". Dude didn't something for us during his tenure that only 4 other elite RBs in the NFL did (regardless of the excuses why others did not) and yet folks will point to how terrible it is.

If a WR goes for over 1000 yards; does anybody point to how many catches it took him to do it?

I have a couple things...

The first thing is congrats to Aaron Maybin for being given another chance to revive his career. Talent gets you these chances, but circumstance and effort are what dictates if it will be a success or not. Hopefully people don't expect too much, but here in Bengal land just being on the team means you are better than 99% of all the other players at your position, regardless of if it is true or not...


The second thing is regarding the direction this thread has taken with Benson. People have a misconception about 1,000 yard seasons. They are completely over valued. Where did the Bengals rushing attack rank in those years? I can tell you without even looking it up that it wasn't very good. Benson consumed all of the carries for this team, and in doing that still only ran for a little over 1,000 yards. So yeah, only a few backs ran for over 1,000 consistently during that stretch but it doesn't mean anything. Would you rather have a 1,000 yard back or would you rather have a 800 yard back and a 600 yard back?

Yes. Yes they do. That's why nobody calls Wes Welker an elite receiver. It's also why nobody calls him a #1 receiver. It's also why the Patriots are okay with letting him hit FA. 10-11 yards per catch isn't a very impressive way to amass 1,000+ yards.

Quick, AJ Green had 1350 yards, Julio Jones had 1198 yards, Roddy White had 1351 yards, and Wes Welker had 1354 yards.... now list those from best WR to worst WR.

Wes Welker is first, right? Because he had more yardage than Green, White, or Jones, right? Because it doesn't matter how many catches it takes.

Gotta agree with you on this one.

In fact, I'm relatively certain once Welker no longer has Brady throwing to him, I doubt he is a 1000 yard receiver anymore.

You can't say that about the other WRs you listed.

Wes Welker IS an elite WR and you just made that case for him by posting his numbers.
Imo elite means the top ten at their position and I would say that he falls into that category.

I never said he was terrible. I said he was mediocre at best. 3.77 ypc attests to that.

Benson stayed healthy. That's all he's got on those guys.

Apples and oranges. A WR has to get open to get catches and yards. That's a skill. Taking a handoff is not.

A RB can average 3.5 per carry (continually setting his team up for 3rd and long), and still get 1000 yards as long as he gets 270+ carries.

You're smart enough to know why Benson was mediocre, but that was your dude. I get it.

I think Jeff Blake was better than most people do. Same with Deltha O'neal.
