Coen Bros. Movies - Cincinnati Bengals Message Boards

After reading the No Country For Old Men, thread.
Found myself asking myself, "Self, what is the best Coen Brother's movie?"
And I found that it is a tough decision.
The Coen Bros. do such a great job of creating memorable characters.

First thoughts, I would have to go....

1 Fargo
2 Burn After Reading
3 O Brother
4 No Country
5 Raising Arizona

But second thoughts, ???
Will watch any of them when they are on. Even though I've seen them all many times.

What do you say?

They have so many great movies. I've seen about all of theirs and would watch future ones "just because it is the Coen Bros."!

They have so many great movies that I couldn't pick just one. I'd have to say "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men" are their best, followed closely by "O Brother, Where Art Thou".

My list:

1. (tie) "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men"
3. "O Brother, Where Art Thou"
4. "Barton Fink"
5. (tie) "Raising Arizona", "Burn After Reading", and "The Big Lebowski"
8. (tie) "True Grit" and "The Hudsucker Proxy"

Others: "Millers Crossing", "The Man Who Wasn't There", "Intolerable Cruelty", "The Ladykillers", and "A Serious Man"

They are all very good in their own right and it's really just a matter of taste.

Here's a question for you: Who is your favorite Coen Brothers character?

I'd have to say Javier Bardem's hitman in "No Country..."

Oh, that's a good question!

My favorite character would be Walter Socheck from the Big Lebowski.

YES!!!! Without Goodman playing that role and without the character, then the Big Lebowski is just a pretty good movie but not a great one. The Walter character makes it a great movie.

Uh, this isn't even questionable.

Raising Arizona.

The others are great films with great actors. Buscemi, Goodman, Robbins, Bardem, Bridges, Leigh, etc. Raising Arizona made Nicholas Cage a good actor for an hour and a half. That is magic.

I think you all are seriously underrating Miller's Crossing....maybe it's just because I'm a sucker for mob movies but I love that one. I'll also say I don't think Lebowski is their best movie (little too long)...but it's my favorite.

No love for Miller's Crossing? That would have to be near the top for me. Fargo would be my #1.

The Big Lebowski might be the most quotable move ever...and it never gets old. Each time I see it I laugh my *** off.

So many great movies and characters it's hard for me to pick a favorite.
O'Brother,Lebowski,Raising Arizona,No Country all at the top for me.
With O'Brother and Lebowski being the most quotable.

I don't know characters names, but my favorite was Clooneys wife in O Brother. I don't know why, she was just great especially when Clooney was fighting her boyfriend in the Woolworths store.

Then his daughters were a trip as well. "He's bonefied" then the other girl busts out with, "He's a suitor". I crack up every time I see them.

Then there are those women doing their wash in the creek.

I love the female sherriff in Fargo and the crying Asian dude was a trip too.

Then the head mobster in Millers Crossing was just a flat out badass.

I liked Woodys character as well in No Country.

Raising Arizona is #1 followed closely by The Big Lebowski and Oh Brother Wheer aret Thou?. Those are the best, but almost all their movies rock.

The only one I have been disappointed with was "Burn after Reading". it still had a lot of wild moments and crazy characters, but the story went nowhere.

"Barton Fink" is probably their most underrated.

I like the Odyssy and know that it was loosely based off of that..

But i just thought O'Brother did a really ****ty job. The best part of that movie was Jon Goodman (the Cyclops) smashing the frog.

Hands down most memorable.....the friggin cow killer still gives me nightmares.

To me, Brad Pitt is not much better at acting than Nick Cage. Yet the Coen Brothers can get a lot out of even limited actors IMO. The Coen Bros. movies were probably the best roles for both of these guys.
