Re: Pistol offence in cincinnati
I'm sorry, but I have zero faith that Dalton can outrun DEs... also, how good is the Bengals OL at pulling? They're the biggest OL in the NFL... which I assume is why they don't really run screens, or at least not successful ones.

You don't need to run the read-option out of the Pistol. It can also be used in the power running game.

Yes, you draw the S in with the power between the Ts, and then (occasionally) bite them with the QB around the end. Also should be noted that the pistol works great with bootlegs and waggles. Both of which Andy can do.

I prefer more to use the semi-automatic on a fence than a pistol.

I think the reason the 49ers were so successful with the pistol is that Kaep was comfortable with it. Instead of implementing the pistol, maybe we should run more shotgun plays.

Idk Shake, the Pistol requires that everyone be exactly on the same page and execute with pretty good precision, only person with options is the QB. In the shotgun, a taller slinger is more favorable, than an average height and more agile type like Andy.

Just remember that the read option is a fad right now because it takes advantage of the rules protecting the QB to in essence have a player be a RB but still get the rule protections of a QB. I am expecting that maybe not in 13 but probably in 14 there will be a rules change that strips the QB of their special protections when they act like a RB.

Dalton is just below the athletic ability to cause a moderate runing threat

Well Andy ran exclusively from shotgun at TCU, that's why I brought it up. Maybe he'd be more comfortable with a few more shotgun plays, idk. Just spitballin. I wouldn't mind running some pistol plays, at least then he wouldn't be taking a direct snap. He may actually be pretty good with the pistol stuff.

We need more plays from the gun. No qb designed runs. Just power runs, boots, waggles, and pocket passes. To me, I would rather Dalton almost never go under center.

His biggest injury happened in the pocket on a random play. Matt Ryan was hurt in the pocket. Kaepernick hasn't been hurt yet. Carson Palmer hurt in the pocket. I'm pretty sure Alex Smith was hurt in the pocket as well

CK has only started 9 games, and he's 6'4, 230lbs, but give it time. He'll be hurt from running the ball soon enough, all QBs are. -Vick at is always hurt running the ball. -RG3's been hurt multiple times running the ball. -Ben's gotten somewhere in the ballpark of 10534 injuries running and extending the play outside the pocket and will be Jim Brown level crippled or worse when he's 40-50. The short term returns from a running QB are great, but it's really not an advisable long term plan. There's a reason Dan Marino, Joe Montana, John Elway, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees... none of them are really running QBs. The closest in that group is maybe Rodgers/Elway, but even they never reached 400 yards rushing. There's just not really any (or many if I overlooked somebody) rushing QBs who were successful over any sort of extended period of time.

Well it's popular in the west coast and other places. It'll be in cincy in about 8-10 years

People constantly point to guys like Steve Young and Fran T. Difference is they were scramblers not actual runners. They used their legs to keep plays alive and would use their legs if a play broke down. They were not in offenses that had a bunch of designed QB runs. If I remember correctly Young has several concussions didn't he?

Instead of chasing fad offenses we could just get good at a standard offense.
