Would the Dalton haters, or you fans in general, want Alex Smith over Andy Dalton?
Personally, I think the upcoming season will tell us what we need to know about 14, so my judgement is being reserved until 1 year from now.

Smith is a product of the great 49ers situation. He would look trash here

That's the question though. Could he start over Dalton? Would he be an upgrade here?

Re: Alex Smith
I think he's more talented than Smith, but I think being on a great team makes him look all that much better. You can't honestly think Smith/CK are super bowl quality. Not only is CK on a super talented team, you can't discredit the ability to sit on the bench for the first 1.5 seasons of a talented QB's NFL career in making them look a lot better. Look at Carson Palmer after his rookie year on the bench. Look at Aaron Rodgers after his THREE years on the bench. They were both much better prepared. Sadly, most teams don't have the luxury to be able to do that.
Helps the guy inherited a team that went 13-3 and 1-1 in the playoffs the year before.. and then took over a 6-2 team. mid-season. So yes, to a certain extent, I think CK is a product as well.

I disagree that next year will tell us all we need to know about AD, as I base that on the history of a multitude of QBs over the years. Many QBs take longer than others to reach their peak level of play, as in 5 plus years or so like a Drew Brees. That said, no, I wouldn't want Alex Smith over Dalton, as we have seen his ceiling in his 9 year career. Dalton's ceiling is I am guessing at least another two years down the road to be seen, if it will be seen that is. And looking at his numbers so far, it could be a pretty high ceiling.

He'd be a great plan B behind Dalton. They're somewhat similar qbs in that they both excel at short passes and struggle a bit with stretching the field. There are 2 reasons I don't see this working:
1. Alex Smith likely sees himself as a starter in this league. If a team needing a qb is unwilling to draft and develop a rookie from this year's weak crop, then Smith is probably on the short list of guys to grab. I don't see him signing to be a backup anywhere unless he has absolutely no luck in FA. 2. I leave Andy alone for another year. I don't want a vet who's proven he can win breathing down his neck just yet. He's gotten to the playoffs twice. We could do a lot worse. I say load him up with another weapon or 2, upgrade at center or LG, and see what happens. Dalton wouldn't even make it to camp without people clamoring for Smith to get the job. If the Bengals get a new no2 qb, it should be a rookie. |

Agreed....CK has been a stud as of late. Alex is in a bad spot and I dont see him getting his job back unless CK gets hurt.

Marvin Lewis has already said that "Andy Dalton is the future of this team" he's not going QB shopping anytime soon.

I personally think we're betting off giving the reins to Dalton for another year. He seems a driven guy anyways so im not sure about him needing competition or whatever. If he drops his standard down the stretch again next year, we may have to look at alternatives. Dont think Alex Smith is so good that it's worth potentially messing Dalton about over it. |

I'm a 49ers fan, so I really like Alex Smith (***** he lost his starting job, but it's working out well for us fans). I can see him going to AZ or CLE maybe even KC.

It's hard not to feel bad for Smith, actually. Different coaches and coordinators, takes his team to the championship game last year, winning this year...How much more can the guy do?

I feel that this year is AD's do or die year.
We will learn this year if he's still able to improve or if we've seen his best already. |

When we've seen his best so far, it's been pretty damn good. That tells me what he can do under the right circumstances. It's up to the organization to make the circumstances right then up to him to be consistently at his best and to continue to improve. If he had never played well, I'd be worried.
