Breaking the Goal Line Plane

I researched this and wondered when the NFL changed the rules to only having to break the plane of the goal line. Surprisingly it was done in 1889. Before then, it was like Rugby and the ball had to literally be touched to the ground by the one scoring.

For all the old timers like myself, when did the players start reaching out with the ball like they do, even on first downs?

They never used to do that, which is why I thought it may have been a more recent rule change?

I have seen that football stretch done since I played HS football back in the 80's. I remember how the coach would hate it if it cost us and love it if it helped.

Oh.....wait ...my bad......I forgot that Mike Brown is the one owner that forbids this. Bengals are the only team that don't do it.

Bet they were using the actual pig as a football then and trying to dodge the cow paddys as well.
