I researched this and wondered when the NFL changed the rules to only having to break the plane of the goal line. Surprisingly it was done in 1889. Before then, it was like Rugby and the ball had to literally be touched to the ground by the one scoring.
For all the old timers like myself, when did the players start reaching out with the ball like they do, even on first downs? They never used to do that, which is why I thought it may have been a more recent rule change? |
