NFL Fan Map

I thought this was pretty cool and interesting.

It's long been a dream of mankind to put together a map showing the geographic locations of NFL fanbases. The CommonCensus map tried to do it though polling; we took a crack at one based solely on proximity. But all previous efforts have been self-selecting or otherwise flawed. If only there was a massive database of millions of Americans identifying their favorite teams, with precise geographic information included.

This is exactly that. Facebook's Data Science team has combed the more than 35 million users who have "liked" a team's fan page, and put it into graphic form, down to the county level. Sean Taylor, who headed the research and analysis, was kind enough to send along the high-resolution maps. Click the overall fandom map above to enlarge.

Takeaways?

• Alaska is confused.
• New England owns New England, and pockets around the country.
• The Jets have just one county—Nassau County, on the western end of Long Island.
• Florida, home of expats, contains pockets of Giants, Patriots, Steelers, Packers, and Bears fans
• The lightly populated Great Plains and Rocky Mountain regions, far from any team, transition from Vikings fandom in the east to Broncos fandom to—unexpectedly—Cowboys fandom in Idaho, Utah, and Nevada.
• Oakland has impressive penetration on the periphery of 49ers country, even into Nevada and Oregon.

Friend chart is interesting. Shows how many bandwagon fans there are as Steelers show up a lot. Bengals/Browns only show up on each others lists which geographically makes sense. Just looked at it and Pit and Dallas show up for every single team....biggest bandwagon fan bases.

I did not see my tiny orange dot on the Cal map.

Interesting info, but it's Facebook, isn't it? I'm not sure of the methodology on their survey, but if it's just among Facebook members, it may not completely reflect the entire fan base, especially among older fans.

The majority average Facebook user is 35-44...about 25%...my guess is that is about the majority average age of football fans

I would love this if they did updates each year, it would be funny to see the bandwagon trend each year (as either BAL or SF will increase here soon).

If this gets alot of publicity, I would also love to see a more county by county trend as well. Alas, I do not have a facebook account, so I am not helping the NV area....I have seen a few other bengals fans around town, but my area is dominated by Steelers and Cowboys, based on license plate borders and auto stickers I see around town.

Hmmm...its based on Liking a Team Page on Facebook and 35 million people are in it.

Notice how fandom switched with playoff wins. The no wins in 23+ years really hurts us.

That map had a lot more orange before Mike Brown took over and ran the franchise off the tracks.
