Default I apparently live in a safe city

A new ranking of America's safest cities is out, Harrisonburg, VA is among them.

That main photo for the article is of the university where I work. Students crossing the bridge over I-81 that splits our campus.

Stupid Law: Dayton, Virginia a part of the Harrisonburg metropolitan area still has a law on the books that says a person of color may not be oustide or within the city limits after 7 p.m.
lol, how is that a law?! They don't and can't enforce that, right?

It's a holdover from who knows when.

Funny story about that law, a friend of mine was a Dayton cop for a while, big black guy who was also in the National Guard, and had done several combat tours while on active duty. So one day we were out at the shooting range having a good time and I told him "if you ever pull me over after dark, I will make a citizen's arrest." He hadn't known that law was still on the books and thought it was hilarious.

Up until recently in a city in the county south of us, it was still a law that if a woman drove down main street, her husband had to walk in front of the car waving a red flag.

I'd say mountain college towns are always relatively safe, but my opinion changed on that in April 16th of 2007.

It still generally holds true, and it was when I lived in Blacksburg. Just hard to say it will a straight face all things considered.

Yeah, honestly I think about things like this and think of all the "timely notices" I get about incidents on and around campus and wonder. But I guess living here most of my life, what seems bad to me seems safe to others.

As for Blacksburg, I'd still say it is relatively safe. An incident like that can happen anywhere, but it is a testament to towns and small cities like Harrisonburg and Blacksburg that violent crimes like that, and on an even smaller scale, aren't commonplace.

This should still be a law and be a federal law.

I'd say that most college towns are relatively safe, simply for the fact that rich people send their children there to grow up.

Like the old American Express commercials used to say, Membership has it's priveliges.

Gun laws in Virginia? Too lax. No background checks at gun shows, open carry without a permit.

The campus is a gun-free zone and has had little to no issues. Off-campus housing areas have had some incidents, mostly involving locals, though. The only JMU-related shooting I can think of was a self-defense incident where a gun was pulled by a local idiot and the student, who had a licensed firearm, shot him in the leg.
