The object that caused the Tunguska event is approximated as being about 200 to 300 ft across. Was most likely made up of ice and rock and exploded a mile or so above the ground and would have wiped out NY easily.

I saw a documentary about this rock. Their is even a plan to send out a ship to intercept it, and use its gravity to put it into orbit around the earth so it could be mined. There are more precsious metals on that rock, than have been mined on earth. If the US got it, we could fix ALL of our financial problems and then some.

Maybe or cause more... If a large amount of a certain rare mineral is found the value of that mineral drops like a rock. (punny i know) So it could just put someone out of business... the real key here will be using the minerals to future get into space. but since it will be a private company doing it soon after companies will be looking to the stars to mine profits.

Not the case. These metals are used in all sorts of new technology productions, and will not drop in value, esp. if one govt is in control of the stockpile. These are elements in VERY short supply on earth.

I agree on several aspects with you, from other posts about the importance of mining. Maybe we can put it int orbit, and mine it and keep it in space and start building our equipment in orbit, so we dont have to spend $$$ on launching it back up. That still feels down the road....

I am not a science person. I'm a stats geek. But I seem to remember our atmosphere has burned up quite a few space rocks since NASA has been monitoring things.

It's all about the composition. If an asteroid is of iron composition, then it could do tremendous damage. The famous Arizona crater is about a mile wide and would devestate any city it hit. It was iron based but only the size of a train car.
