PEMDAS - A blessing and an annoyance

Ok, It's nice that most people remember that term long after school, but if only they could remember how it flippin works.

There's this picture (see below) floating around on Facebook that states '80% can't answer this math problem' I looked at it thought no way.



I then proceeded to look at the comments posted and people are arguing it's 1 because 'thats how pemdas opperates'. No junior, you're leaving out the most crucial rule to PEMDAS. Multiplication/Divison is read from left to right (same case with addition/subtraction), not necessarily having to do multiplication before division if the division comes first .

I'm not even a math wizard or such and this annoyed me. Like clockwork, a new idiot emerges every 2 seconds preaching the answer is 1

I doubt you would ever see a respectable mathematician/textbook write it like this. It looks pretty intentionally misleading just to start up a 9 or 1 debate. 9 is the correct answer of course.

How come ? Everyone here got the correct answer. Are you saying because there's not literally a multiplication sign right before the parenthesis? I thought the problem was pretty basic..

What's really annoying is that it is no longer "please excuse my dear aunt sally", kids say it as "pemdas". So I'm sitting in class talking about order of operations and these kids are looking at me like I'm crazy because I'm going on about my aunt.

I thought my education was adequate, but I guess I was wrong.
The problem is easy. Just not familiar with PEMDA.
