Why did Johnny Appleseed wear a pot on his head?

Did John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman really wear a pot on his head?

I'm not sure if he did or not, I can't seem to find the answer. Maybe it was just the way Disney portrayed him and that stuck to the legend.

And yes Virginia, there was a Johnny Appleseed who lived and planted thousands of apple trees throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.

I believe it's a metaphor for his affection for weed. He also had the munchies.....

Not sure if he did. It could have just been a characterization of some of the caps of the time which had an elongated bill. It also could have been he figured it was handier than carrying it, as he would need it in his travels for cooking.

We Virginians don't need to bother with him, though. We have a rich apple history without the likes o' 'im.
