OSU's final pre-combine Mock

I would hope we all realize this is all subjective as of now as many things change with the combine. This draft is taken off draft projection as of right now which means things could be vastly different after the combine. It is also assuming that we retain our major FAs and no unexpected signings happen in FA.

Please keep in mind that as of right now it looks as if some key players many are looking at appear, at least at this point, to be off the boards when you go thru the vast amount of Mock info. Guys such as Ogletree, Patterson, Vacarro, Ansah, Jordan are all projectign to be gone at 21.

RD. 1 - 21st Overall:

Xavier Rhodes - CB - Florida State 6'1" 217

The CBA and rookie cap lend itself to this sort of selection which some may consider a luxury. Fact is you can never have to many good CBs in the pass happy NFL. I think the age and lost step of Newman is what led this defense to show soft coverage and huge cushions. Rhodes is the most physical CB in this draft and is right up the alley of Zimmer. Dre has not been healthy and we have seen this defense without Hall.

While I would like to see Adam Jones back it would be at a greatly reduced defensive role and much more of a return presence. Ghee cannot get on the field and Prater had a season ending injury as well. The worst you end up with is a great nickel corner in Dre or Rhodes.

Bottomline....I see Rhodes as best player availabe.

RD. 2 - 37th overall

Jonathan Cyprien S Florida International 6'0" 209

Yes with Matt Elam on he board the Bengals select Cyprien. Cyprien has shown better range and better tackling skills. He is a physical wrap up tackler and is a devastating hitter. Very good coverage and run support skills. Has the potential to be that Safety that is feared by receivers over the middle. Arrived at the Senior Bowl and showed his all out on every play motor.

RD. 2 - 53rd overall

Travis Frederick C/G Wisconsin 6'4" 338

There is not a lot of question that this line must form an identity and get more physical at the point of attack. The trend started with the selection of Zeitler and will continue with the selection of Frederick. I think Frederick will be asked to get down to a playing weight of 320-328 and will be given the opportunity to compete for the starting Center position. And he will win the position. Cook will be released and Robinson will continue to be developed as a backup C/G.

RD.3 - 84th overall

Christine Michael RB Texas A&M 5'10" 221

A good combination of size and speed. Explosive runner that hits the hole hard. Has shown good vision and patience. Soft hands and a good receiver out of the backfield. Early college injury history but has shown no ill effects. Some questions in regard to controversy between him and new coaching staff at A&M yet still remained productive. Will start 2013 as the feature back for this offense and will help form the power running identity. Could be the steal of the draft.

RD. 4 - 115th overall

Gerald Hodges OLB Penn State 6'1"239

Outside of a top tier FA LB signing Hodges will be the player to beat for starting SLB in 2013. Hodges does it all and does it rather well. Can tackle and cover and is under appreciated as a blitzer. Has the speed to run with backs and TEs and is a fundamentally sound player.

Kenjon Barner RB Oregon 5'9" 188

I have one word for 2013.....weapons. Barner is an explosive playmaker that can take it to the house each time he touches it. I do not think he receives enough credit for his play between the tackles. Is diverse enough as a runner that defenses will not just be able to play the edge when he is in the game. Great hands as a receiver out of the backfield. Will be given the opportunity to be a factor in the return game as well.

Rodney Smith WR Florida State 6'5" 219

Big tall receiver that while not a burner has shown a second gear. Has shown the ability to gain separation to get open. Is a threat down the field and could cause match up problems. Needs to become more physical and learn to finish plays.

RD. 6 - 189th overall

Michael Williams TE Alabama 6'6" 270

Hands down the best blocking TE in the draft. However, do not let size and blocking ability fool you. While used primarily as a blocker has shown reliable hands as a receiver. Has received way too much criticism for a single turnover against LSU.

I would like to add to this some UDFA prospects I feel this team should look at:

1: No problems taking Rhodes at 1. Good player that has the size, speed, and coverage skills to hang with the biggest of receivers.

2A: Cyprien is a good selection as well. He did well in the Senior Bowl. He is a smart player, which is a big plus.

2B: Frederick would be a home run. Extremely intelligent, big enough to handle 3-4 NTs, and the best part is he has proven very good at both LG and C, which are our two biggest weaknesses on our starting OL.

3: Michael has gone under the radar in terms of stats because of his injuries and being in the doghouse this past year. He would be best used in a RBBC to minimize injuries. Yet another good selection. I too think we will have to take him in round 3, as he should perform well at the combine.

4: One of the last good options for OLB in the draft. Coverage would be something we have missed at SAM for quite a long time. Good pick.

5: Barner fits the perfect role of third-down receiving/outside runner that can also do returns. Once again, great pick.

6A: Agree on Rodney. Not a superstar yet, but has the physical traits to become something. He would hopefully take Whalen's waste of a roster spot. Good that WR was addressed in the draft at some point.


6B: Pretty obvious how useful Michael Williams would be to our team. If he lasts until the sixth, STEAL.

Only thing I wish to see was either a WR taken much earlier that is more complete that would have a good shot to be our starting WR2. Either that, or get someone via FA. I guess the only WR I have faith in other than Green is Sanu, but feel he would be best utilized as our slot, with Jones and Hawkins serving as special package or backup players.

Great draft if it were to happen.

Yea I see Sanu as a very similar receiver to Housh. Who would swing outside on three receiver sets? We used to use Henry for such roles, but we really don't have one of his caliber now. I would think someone like Terrance Williams would fit that role very well if we wanted to fill in round 2. Tavarres King or Chris Harper if we went for WR in round 4. For FA, someone like Hixon could fit as that role too. Marvin Jones is about the best option right now for that role unfortunately.

1. I don't hate it if the LBs are off the board. Rhodes and Kirk would be an imposing set of outside CBs with Hall manning the slot. This is definitely a passing league and having 3 outstanding CBs for the next 4 seasons would be a great way to defend the aerial attacks that we'll see. With Rhodes size, he could also play some S and/or cover TEs and backs, so he helps us in an area of weakness.

2. S is deep and we should easily walk away with a starter in one of the first 3 rounds. I'm not overly up to date on this guy, but if what you wrote is true, then he would be an asset. You don't always have to go with the big name!

2. I'm okay with this pick if guys like Bernard, Lacy, Brown and Greene are gone. I don't see C as a hugely pressing need; people are so down on Cook, but no one seems to want to allow for the fact that missing more than half the season can be tough on any player. That said, this kid does represent an upgrade, and you can't ever complain when a starter is upgraded.

3. Definitely some runners I would prefer, but if we wait until 3 then not a bad selection.

4. I really like Hodges as well and can't see why he is currently locked into the 4th. Him moving up a round or a round and a half wouldn't be shocking when all is said and done.

5. WOuld love to see Barner in 5 if he falls that far; he would be a great pickup and could be a playmaker for us.

6. Don't know much about him, but you can't hate that kind of size in 6.


6. Love Williams, but I think he goes much higher in the end. Getting him here would be an absolute steal. A TE group featuring Gresh, Charles and Williams would be very well rounded and one of the better the league has to offer.

Would love to see Boren signed UDFA; he is so damn versatile.

I like a good number of your picks. I don't like going CB S out of the first 3 picks though. Still not a huge Lacy fan for us. Hodges, Frederick, Williams, Barner are all good picks to me. Still not convicted in Michael going in the top 3 rounds.

I could live with this draft but would prefer one of the DB's not e chosen and not Michael that high. Otherwise fairly decent mock.

Thanks for your input coach. I think Dre will show up this season but again with all three the injury bug leads to a tempering of my excitement. I really like the skillset of Ghee and when we brought him in I viewed him as the poor man's JJ. Unfortunately, he just cannot get on the field.

Allen-I really liked him as a FA pickup and thought he would really strengthen the position but we all know how that turned out. I guess I am not hesitant with a CB selection because of our injury history at the position and it goes all the way back to when we first brought JJ in.

What I see in Rhodes are two things you cannot coach-size and speed. His size is no doubt elite. Speed while not elite is still respectable. I would not be shocked to see him run from mid 4.4 to low 4.5. If he runs low 4.4 then I think you will see his stock rise even more.

I just can't get on board with a CB in the 1st. Between OLB, RB (not preferred), SS, C, WR2, one of these selections would add more value.

Who would those players be? As explained if Patterson were there then I would select him that is wishful thinking though. He is theonly WR I would use the 21st selection on.

As explained it appears Vacarro is going to be off the boards with our selection. There is not another S (Marvin and Zimmer do not differentiate) that I would take with the 21st pick.

Ogletree should be off the boards with our selection and honestly not a selection I would be thrilled with if he were there.

There is not a C one or RB that is worth a 21st selection IMO.

Are there players you have in mind as you offered positions but no one to go with them?

Though I am not opposed to Rhodes at 21 or your entire draft, I just wonder if Rhodes might be available later. Then again, getting a corner to start now who can start for years to come is not a bad thing and very much a BPA mentality. I like that you address the O Line and specifically LG/C. Taking a RB in rd 3 or later is a good policy.

All in all, a solid draft, especially considering the uncertainty of Free Agency still not even being underway/complete.

I would like to add to this some UDFA prospects I feel this team should look at:

Early injury history however suffered from very little protection and support. Has shown great touch on the ball allowing receivers to make plays after the catch.

Zach Boren FB Ohio State 6'0" 245

Brandon Kaufman WR Eastern Washington 6'4" 214

It would be hard not to love this draft. The problem is after our first 2 picks, you have the rest your draft guys slotted way below their draft rankings on most sites I read.

Frederick is a top 50 player.
Barner is a top 100 player.
Hodge is a top 100 player

I could go on, but it appears after our 3rd pick, you have guys slotted to us a round later than they will be drafted. But, heck, I hope those guys are sitting there because this would be an awesome draft.

As explained it appears Vacarro is going to be off the boards with our selection. There is not another S (Marvin and Zimmer do not differentiate) that I would take with the 21st pick.

Ogletree should be off the boards with our selection and honestly not a selection I would be thrilled with if he were there.

There is not a C one or RB that is worth a 21st selection IMO.

I agree on the RB in the 1st round. WTS, RB is such a need, I wouldn't be horribly upset if the Bengals got "their" guy in the 1st.

My dream players would be Jarvis Jones & Werner.
My first tier players would be Vaccaro or Ogletree.
My 2nd tier players would be Okafor or Barrett Jones.
Third tier possibilities would be Ezekiel Ansah (right size for 4-3 DE) & Matt Elam.
Need more info: Manti Te'o & Kevin Minter.

At least 1 or 2 or more of these players will be available at 21.

If we sit on our hands in free agency and don't sign anybody, I would be a little miffed if the draft went down like this.

Our offense has struggled mightily this year against good teams. I don't see much help on that side of the ball. It also leaves a little bit to be desired on the LB side of things if our roster stays as is since we only have 1 returning starter at LB.

I like the players that you picked, but as you stated in your preamble, if nothing unusual happens in free agency we will be left with some major unfilled holes at WR and LB.
