#1 team under the cap! (Couple questions)

NFL.com just posted where each of the 32 teams stand cap-wise going into next season, and you guessed it, our beloved Bengals are the #1 team under the cap with $50.6 mil of cap space. (#2 is Cleveland with 43mil)

That just fired me up!

I mean, we're a playoff team with the most room under the cap.

So for someone like me that doesn't follow the money-side heavily, I have a couple questions..

#1 - From the reading I've done, we're going to spend a TON of money keeping our FAs, but if we are able to resign everyone, how much cap space could we have? And who could we get for that cash?

#2 - Also, I saw that some teams were OVER the cap. Is the salary cap a soft cap with a luxury tax?

We also have more free agents than any other team( i believe)

Its not a simple question or Answer...

You have to look at the dead weight money tied up into players like Clements and Allen that probly wont return thats not on the books but thats also 2 additional players we must sign.

We have 22 i believe free agents.. Several will be replaced with Draft pick others with Free agents and many will be resigned.

The main reason we have money to spend is because we have so few players under contract for next year. Tons of expiring contracts.

Most of the money will be used up re-signing the guys we want to keep who are free agents now, trying to extend the contracts of players who are set to expire, and then just filling out the roster so we have enough players to field a team.

Why is Clements dead money? He's a FA this year, so unless I'm missing something, that isn't dead money. Allen could be if we cut him. His whole situation is cloudy, as he finally returned from the injury report and still never saw the field. It would be nice to get some kind of explanation from either the team or at least some writer like Reedy that may have some details.

As for the priorities you listed, I agree with all but Gresham and possibly Dunlap. Gresham is not worth an extension right now, and we should wait till at least halfway through the next season to see if he has become more consistent. Dunlap also needs to show consistency, but looks to warrant an extension over Gresham. That is unless you are meaning to capitalize on their lack of consistency to date, hoping that we can sign them for a relatively cheaper extension and also that they become much better over the next year(s).

IF we resign/extend the guys on that list...minus Gresham...it's going to probably consume about $40-45 million of cap space.

I severely doubt the team keeps MJ/Dunlap/and Atkins. I just don't see them investing $26-28 million in 3 guys.
