Default The pope resignes...!

Guess he's looking for a change. Opportunities for promotion just were too rare in his job.

Rumor has he and God wanna stay friends, though.

Huge news. First time in nearly 600 years. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a historic event. I don't think we are getting the full story, but with nearly 2000 years of experience in keeping secrets, I'm not sure we will ever find out.

We might have found out what he did had he not resigned.. but im guessing this was forced by the church. Like a president resigning before being impeached.

He said it's health related. (- Well, no surprise it's not family related). - Anyway, looks like the Ratz is leaving the sinking ship.

Now who should be his successor? [- Tim Tebow, you're up.]

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the Church of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

- Benedictus XVI

Scary stuff!!!

"The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Roman Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and concluding with the successor of current pope Benedict XVI, a pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome."

The prophecy ends with:

"Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end."

I didn't even know the Pope could resign.

Personally, I don't see anything sinister about it. The dude is old and Poping takes a toll. God bless him in his future endeavors.

Just weird, really. I mean, JP2 was pretty much a walking corpse at the end of it. To say you are resigning for health reasons after that, kind of interesting.

This pope is supposedly the next to the last according to that prophecy. Although there is a ton of controversy regarding this whole prophecy thing. Supposedly this list came out after centuries of popes and the future predicted pope predictions were extremely vague. Also the guy would have to end the list somewhere right?

I also found this...

In 1909, while granting an audience, pope Pius X leaned back and closed his eyes. Suddenly he "awoke" and cried out: "What I see is terrifying. Will it be myself? Will it be my successor? What is certain is that the pope will quit Rome, and in leaving the Vatican, he will have to walk over the dead bodies of his priests."

Does this mean they go through the whole process of picking the next Pope, or do they have a special set of different rules?

I'm too lazy to research and read currently.

Will it be Rome that's destroyed or Cincinnati?

Good-bye Cincinnati, I hardly knew you. Well, that's not true, I grew up in Cincinnati, Westwood as a matter of fact, lol.

I support U.D.'s own Fr. Guido Sarducci as the next Pope.

The Pope was pooped.

Or maybe he just got tired of the comparisons to Emperor Palpatine.
