Default If we let MJ walk and sign Dwight Freeny

Is that an upgrade, a downgrade, or do we break even.

I think we upgrade short term because Freeney will be cheaper and he'll be playing his natural position at DE instead of LB, but he's only a one or two year option.

I think it would be a major downgrade. Why would you let a young complete DE coming into the prime of his career go and sign an older, undersized, pass rusher?

Freeney is a much better pass rusher, but I think he would hurt on running downs.

Freeney is on the wrong side of 30.

Plus he can't stop the run very well at all.

Not everybody magically drops off once they hit 30. I'm pretty sure the Ravens just won the Super Bowl with one of the oldest defenses in the league.

It would be a downgrade. MJ's run stopping ability is severely under rated around here.

I would love to add Freeney. but not if it meant losing MJ.

Geathers getting playing time ahead of Dunlap proves that Zim and Marvin value run stopping ability greatly in their DEs. Freeney is not their ideal DE by a long shot. He would be a pass rushing specialist here.

It would only be a slight downgrade, but Freeney is 33 years old.

Downgrade. MJ is just coming into his prime. He is still learning the game. Freeny was great, still might be good, but provides nothing for the future.

Whether he is cheaper should not matter in the upgrade/downgrade debate, but I think he would be a downgrade (age and runstopping) compared to MJ.

Now, compared to Geathers, I think that's another story.

You wouldn't replace MJ with Freeney. And replacing MJ with a rookie in the draft is also a downgrade for at least two years.

Bringing in Freeney is not a bad idea however. But it would be to complement and rotate in, not to replace. Would have to be at a fair price for the team.

I do like the idea of bringing in come players who have high work ethic and have won championships so that the players on the Bengals can see what it really takes. That's why I'd like to Greg Jennings given a look at a two year deal. He would help the team's young receivers.

The Bucs are not going to franchise Bennett, I think he would make a better replacement, not as good as MJ but better that Freeney.

Freeney is one-dimensional.

The Bengals spoon fed us the fact that they are going to retain their own for about 2 years. They MUST retain MJ. Anything less is unacceptable.

Downgrade.

MJ looks to be at the start of a promising career.

Freeney is at the end of a stellar career.

No

Freeny was good once.

I heard Favre is looking for another comeback?

Freeney is too old. Let's keep MJ and let Freeney walk on by. No sense trying to build next year's contender with last year's geriatric ward. Keep our young guys and build that dynasty.

I suspect that Freeney is better and will better than MJ though yes, he will have fewer years left to play in all likelihood. We're talking about a guy who started out as a Defensive Player of the Year, has been to 7 pro-bowls, has over 100 sacks and super-bowl ring. Who knows though. Maybe MJ gets really good in his second time around with us. So far he isn't all that, IMO.

Freeney only recorded 10 tackles all of last season. He was basically only brought in on passing downs. Smith and MJ are three down players. Why would you want to replace a three down player with a moderately successful one down player.

Freeney was amazing, but he has lost a step or two and that was the basis of his game. No to Freeney.

At this point maybe comparable but long term pay MJ that money upfront and get him cheap in latter years. Don't beat stupid over a million bucks..Laverneous Coles vs TJ?

If the Bengals let MJ walk and sign Freeney, I'll be disappointed to say the least.

But, if that were to occur, I would at least hope that they would back that up by selecting a serious 3 down DE in the draft.

Deep draft for it.
