I'm sure he looked great throwing to open receivers in shorts. He's got an absolute cannon for an arm, and he's more mobile that most, but he's a complete idiot. He'll never be a good quarterback, because he'll never be a student of the game. He wasn't only overweight; he struggled in every area.

Correct me if I'm wrong here....but wouldn't we want a qb similar to Andy?

That way if something were to happen the offense can continue on with minimal adjustments

Wouldn't Russell just be like having a fatter, dumber Carson Palmer?

Fatter, dumber John Skelton is more accurate.

How so? In Russell's last season (2009), he competed 48.8%, averaged 5.2 yards/attempt, had 3 TDs to 11 INTs with a 50.0 passer rating.

In Tebow's last year that he started (2011), he completed 46.5%, but averaged 6.4 yards/attempt, had 12 TDs to only 6 INTs with a 72.9 passer rating.

Nevermind the fact that Tebow is a FAR better runner (989 yards and 12 scores in only 16 career starts) and Tebow is clearly better.

Not only that, Tebow has actually been playing while Russell has been sitting at home for the last 3 seasons.

I'd love to see Russell doing John Morrell ads like Carson

Bill Belichick disagrees with you.

Our backup QB situation doesn't look too hot now, but if I remember correctly Skelton flashed a few times in Arizona behind that horrible offensive line so he should be fine.

Worst case scenario, we bring him in he ***** and we cut him. Best case scenario he wins the backup job and creates good competition at the position. If Dalton misses a couple games and he plays well he could potentially become excellent trade bait down the line. It's not out of the realm of possibility. He does come with baggage obviously but what he has that can't be taught is talent. A lot of things can be coached but talent is what is sought. I realize he screwed up, but let's say he's learned from his mistakes and has matured to a point where he's ready to take that next step. Why wouldn't we wanna capitalize on that situation. This is a talent driven league and apparently he's got that. Not looking for him to become our franchise guy but if he could solidify our backup position and bring us a draft pick or two in the future then we'd be remiss for not exploring the possibility.

No. I was looking for a Tarvaris Jackson thread as he was just cut by the Bills, but I bet I'm overlooking all three of them somehow. Russell has a big arm but I don't understand the draw given the situation. If you want to give a guy another chance thats one thing, but I'd rather sign a vet that hasn't been out of the game that long.

Although I understand your line of thinking, you're not going to find another player on the street with Russell's talent and measurables . He had issues with depression due to the untimely deaths of people really close to him that he wasn't capable of dealing with. I know how tough that can be having suffered a similar situation. He was young and ill prepared for his situation, but he could overcome it. He certainly brings a wow factor that no veteran retread will give you. I just think that his upside warrants an opportunity. Could work out great for us.

I'm all about 2nd chances, and whats funny is Mike Brown might be even more about them. I'm not saying they won't do it, remember they did look at bringin in Vick after what he went through. I can't say I've been through what Russell has, but he was given a ton of money and ate himself out of the league. If for some crazy reason he becomes the best option out there and they still aren't happy with the current backups...possibly. Til then, Jackson and even Leinart throwing at AJ or checking down to a TE look like better options than seeing if Russell may be an NFL leader. I hope that Russell is able to work for a 2nd chance, make millions and maybe win some games, but this isn't a rebuilding year and I'd like to see a backup I can trust.

Yea, he did, but what a talent. If we're gonna keep three QBs I wouldn't mind seeing if he was willing to actually commit to studying the way one needs to in order to be a legit QB in this league.

Cuz that would be the question. He will show the NFL talent that he certainly has if he is in shape. But more than being stupid, I think his problem was more just not caring at all. If he actually applied himself, he would probably be all right.

Russell has arm talent that Tebow simply does not regardless of results. Tebow applies himself to his craft as far as knowing the plays and does everything you expect a QB to do and is still awful.

Russell's problem was not giving a rat's arse about anything let alone actually knowing his playbook once he got paid.

I agree. He's an intriguing talent, but unless we were going to keep three QBs, no thanks, I would not want him as second string.

Skelton and JaFatso both have horrid completion rates and accuracy issues. Skelton couldn't just close his eyes and throw the ball anywhere near Fitzgerald with any sort of success rate, so perhaps AJ could pick up the slack. Nah, Skelton won't see the field.

Also, I found this which is semi-interesting.

I think any NFL team thats slightly interested should pass on Jamarcus and let him play a season in the CFL first.

and is there anything wrong with that? people change. he could have seen what he was doing was wrong. I would definitely give jamarcus another chance. he deserves it just as much as anyone else.

I would give him a 2nd chance, just not with the bengals.

when your only motivation is money its not a great thing for the team...

This J russell thread was about bringing him here to be a backup if you dont support that then you dont support russell..

I could care less if he gets a shot elsewhere or not just as long as it isnt here.

every single player in the NFL is in it for the money. do you think they would be doing it for free or for minimum wage? so I cant support a player that is not on this team? I suppose I don't support tyler eifert since he is not technically on the team yet am I right? I cant support any other player on any other team is that right?

So what exactly is "arm talent"? Just going off of arm strength, Russell probably has the strongest arm on the planet. Tebow has arm strength to make all the throws, but he's not on Russell's level there. Are you talking accuracy? I hope not. Russell is straight awful in terms of accuracy. He's no better than Tebow there.

Then Tebow beats Russell across the board in every remaining category. Work ethic, leadership, running ability, ability to keep weight in check, etc. He's also actually been in the league, while Russell has missed 3 seasons. Anyone who says Russell is a better option than Tebow just doesn't like Tebow.

You can do whatever you please im not your daddy.... You make such poor arguements its almost a waste of time to respond.

This thread is about J Russell to the bengals and if you want that your nuts. dude can throw the ball down the field but he couldnt hit the board side of a barn. Has poor work ethic and attitude. These are things that wont be fixed with coaching.

hes been out of the league 3 years. Its not a good fit. Now if you want to go start a thread about you lovefest with J Russell in around the NFL that would be a better fit.

As it is in Jungle noise its about the bengals not about other teams.

once again, your complaining to me about the placement of this thread when I am not a moderator. ive not made an argument for jamarcus, all I have said is that people CAN change and deserve a 2nd chance. you can argue that no one does but I don't really care. you do what you want. im gonna do what I want. you make pointless arguments too that have already been said a half dozen times or more. every one said vick couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and he was out of the league for 2 years in prison but yet he got another chance and has played decently
