Because Hixon would be to compete for the starting WR2 spot. Mellette would be to replace Whalen, who has less potential than Mellette. IMO the WR depth chart would look like this...
WR1: Green, Mellette
WR2: Hixon, Jones
SLOT: Sanu, Hawkins
It's funny you bring up that we may not even need one. What happened when Sanu went down? Our passing game suffered. Sure, he could still emerge as our starting WR2, but why not boost our depth when we have a chance? The debate is more of where Sanu would thrive most, and I think the slot. Jones needs more work, and Hixon could be a solid WR2 for us without costing the team a ton of money.
