you're so quick to proclaim the Bengals have holes and cant do anything but when the Colts get wiped out to a team that the Jets and Bills lasted 4 quarters with in the same stadium, you insinuate that they'll be fine?

2. Semi-regular success against the Ravens and especially the Steelers. Marvin has a 5-15 record against Pittsburgh. Since we swept the division in 2009, we're 1-9 against the Steelers and Ravens. Hard to make the playoffs like that.

3. Playoff wins. It's been 21 long years since we won a postseason game. The Bengals only have 5 playoff wins in their 43 year history. Compare that to teams like the Packers and Steelers. Heck, compare that to any team.

I expect these things and until I see all this happen, I'll always have my doubts.
I agree with your thoughts.
In today's NFL, year-to-year improvement and sustained success seems really difficult. The poster child for year-to-year improvement leading to SB, is the 90s Cowboys. I thought the Lions where headed in that direction, but this year they have regressed. So, it would be nice to see the Bengals show improvement and consistency.
It would be great to make the playoffs and win a game, after breaking the Pitt and Balt spell. Maybe with our run D complete, we can now compete with Ravens and Steelers. But can Dalton win a close game against those two Teams? It takes a whole lot of work to improve from a B grade to an A.

One game at a time we are 5-5 and your screaming playoffs give me a break we lost to the Browns. The DNO shirts in preseason helped get us into this mess thinking we are better then we are.Take it one game at a time way to early to look at playoffs so you know what you can do with your poll.

the Steelers have lost to the Raiders and Titans and the Colts lost to the Jaguars and Jets, it's fair game for everyone at this point

Did not jump ship but stuck a toe in the water to check the temperature but stayed on deck.

Think that the Bengals make the Playoffs. But think it goes down to the wire as well, with Bengals prevailing of course.

Who-Dey!
The Bengals have more of a chance this week than they did a couple of weeks ago. They finally broke out of their slide and put together the team's first back to back 18+ point wins in over 20 years. That's a major factor in the renewed optimism. It's not just that the Bengals have won the past two weeks,it's that they have been totally dominant the past two weeks. They actually look like a team that could reel off 4-5 straight wins, which is what they need to do to make the playoffs,at this point. Had the Bengals squeeked by the past couple of weeks and escaped with narrow victories, then I don't think most of us would have that same confidence.

Another big factor is simply the fact that Ben Roethlisberger got hurt at a critical point in the Steelers' schedule. Because of that, the Bengals now have a much more realistic shot of picking up the games they need to overtake Pittsburgh for the final WC spot.

Well to be fair now Denny, even you didn't give them much of a shot before the season began. If I remember right you said they were a year away from being a serious contender in the playoffs. That said, I didnt give them much of a chance after they lost their 4th in a row to the Broncos as most didn't. Now that they started to play better, who knows.

As to what everyone else wrote, meh, not going to read this whole thread.

Since 1990, only seven of 121 teams who have started 3-5 have reached the postseason.

Enough said...

I wasn't vocal about it, but I will admit I thought the Bengals were done. I have more hope now. They have played well, but they still need to know how to play great when they have to.

Personally I think the division record will keep the Bengals out of the big dance. And I have said many times before two winning seasons in a row has to be a goal, notwithstanding the playoffs

Sorry 4-5 in the conference

Has nothing to do with jumping off a ship,,and everything to do with poor ownership and even worse coaching which is why we see the same garbage every year. Its people like you denny that keep this mangled sinking ship afloat because every year you think we are going to do something.

This team is not making the playoffs this year,,,and if by some cold chance in hell they do they will go one and done again as they will actually be playing some talent with good coaching.

And please do not reference the giants game as the giants and eli are notorious for being extremely streaky.

This is the Dead Cat Bounce part of the season. Ususally it comes at the end, but with Pittsburgh and Baltimore at the end, it is happening a little early. The 5 losses mean that the Bengals have to finish one game ahead of the next contender. To do that, they probably cannot lose more than one game the rest of the season. Oak and SD are likely wins, Philly is looking good, but Dallas, Pitt and Baltimore, they have to win two of three. They lose to Oak or SD, season is over.

Obviously, I'm more upbeat than I was. BUT, this team still really hasn't won a nut-cutting game. The Giants game was a good win and momentum builder, BUT really doesn't count beans in tie breaker scenarios. It would be equivalent to losing to the Cowboys or Eagles ..... which won't hurt that much. The wins they still MUST have are 1) first and foremost the Steelers, and 2) the Ravens. I still believe they can lose one but it better not be the Steelers or Ravens.

And I think that is about where I was at 2 weeks ago. Only now I think our chances of holding fort until the last 2 games of the season are reasonable. Both the Eagles and Cowboys are a mess with serious QB issues which I did not anticipate. The frickin Panthers are favored over the Eagles in Philly. That means you are really bad when a 2-9 team is favored on the road.

1) I did not vote in the poll because it only gives two extreme options. I would say Cincy clearly has a shot, but that in no way means they will make the playoffs.

2) Cincy's had two great games. But it's only two, and one was against arguably the worst team in the league.

3) The OP completely ignores the #1 factor in Cincy's advantages right now. The biggest reason is because the rest of the AFC wild card contenders are TANKING. Prior to the Giants game, Cincy was around 9th or 11th in line for a wild card spot. It's crazy that that the teams above Cincy have all been losing at the same time. I don't think anybody could have honestly predicted that.

4) Getting a WC spot still requires Cincy to win almost all of the remaining games (a winning streak that requires more from their minds than their talent), AND for everybody else to stay pat or get worse. Nobody could have predicted Pittsburgh falling off a cliff right now. And if Big Ben returns to form by mid-December, Cincy's chances drop off a cliff again.

So while I am very excited that the Bengals currently have pulled their heads out of their butts and started playing to potential, there is absolutely no guarantee or even a likelihood that the rest of the AFC will continue to sit back while Cincy climbs out of its hole.

The OP is just creating some dissent. It's the whole "You're either with us, or against us attitude". This is a thread meant to identify the "Homers" and the "Haters". In reality, the chances of the Bengals making the playoffs are decent, but they have to get the job done themselves, and hope for some help. Saying that they're a shoe in for the postseason is just silly when they don't even control their own destiny. Counting them out when they are 1 game and a tiebreaker behind both wildcard teams is just as bad though.
