My 79 year old mother started suffering severe pain just above her ankle. You could feel a lump on the front of her shin bone. After an MRI the doctor told her that she had stress fractures and bone swelling. She was not familiar with stress fractures and did not understand if the bone swelling caused the stress fracture or if the stress fracture caused the bone swelling.
I did a little research and found about 60 different causes for bone swelling, but I am still unclear on what exactly happened to her. I know about stress fractures, but I can't think of anything my mother was doing that would have caused them. I don't know anything about bone swelling. Anyone know anything about this condition? There was a long list of bone diseases that could cause bone swelling, but the doctor did not give her any diagnosis of a disease or any medication. He just immobilized the leg in a brace that she can remove at night and told her to treat it like a broken bone. Just rest and stay off it whenever possible. She does have arthritis in her ankle from an old injury, but this problem seems to be above her ankle. |

At 79, female and a mother at one point, it sounds like she might have osteoporosis. But I'm no expert. Anyway, that might explain the fracture. Maybe the bone swelling too.

This was my first thought as well.

Hot chicks are usually the cause of my bone swelling.

For once I won't complain. Kind of like when BengalRugby makes a post in a workout thread.

I'll give you a hint... Rich Braham. And at least 50% of what BengalRugby writes regarding physiology and biochemistry is just flat out wrong.

That's because I chose to quote within the quote, the lazy way. You know, how the rest of the 96% that aren't as intellectually inspired as you are, might do. Btw, way to smack Fred for asking legitimate questions about his grandmother, or whoever. You like to flaunt your medical and moral superiority to many on here, but I rarely see you post anything actually Bengals related. Coincidence, I think not. You Ma'am, are a troll, imo.

Well, you usually beat me to anything actually Bengals related so I really don't have anything to add. It gets boring reading the same comment 37 times in a single thread in JN so I usually don't add the same comment the 38th time. I never knew you paid that much attention to my posts. I'm flattered, but stop hitting on me. I'm not interested. No matter how many pictures you post of yourself working out in your avatar as gay bait, it's not gonna happen. What did Marvin say Rich Braham had which kept him from playing most of his last season? A bone bruise. That's what bone swelling is. A bone bruise. It is only visible on an MRI. It can't be seen on an xray or CT scan. The MRI reveals increased fluid and blood within the bone at the site of injury. The stress fracture caused the bone swelling. Now look at the picture on your pack of Virginia Slims cigarettes in your purse. You will see a older, white, thin woman who smokes. Those are your risk factors for osteoporosis. Not too mention 79 y/o women have decreased bone denisty even if they don't have osteoporosis. Stress fractures are microscopic fractures in the bone that usually can't be seen on xrays until at least 2 weeks of healing has occured so you might see new calcification along the fracture line, but usually even then they don't show up. Stress fractures are usually caused by overuse or minor trauma. In a 79 y/o women with or without osteoporosis, it would take less overuse or minor trauma than one might usually expect. A stress fracture is usually treated with rest, ice, compression, elevation, NSAIDs to reduce inflammation causing pain, and most importantly a tincture of time to allow the injury to heal. Now I don't need to tell Fred any of this because Fred is an expert on bone bruises. He has informed me of this in the past. This explanation was strictly for your benefit. But, you could have checked with WebMD instead of bringing my name up.
