They took weights out of jails and prisons over a decade ago. Inmates were getting too big and some were using them as weapons. With that being said, I hope he's at least been in there studying football and staying out of trouble. Our prison system has a knack for taking a petty criminal and turning them into a hardened thug. While I am impressed with the guy's natural talent, I also realize he may never reach his potential under this coaching staff. We all know MELVIN's penchant for playing rookies / younger players. I'd almost expect to never see this kid on the field unless someone got hurt. No matter how good he may be. Dre Kirk is this year's version. Joiner will be next year's. |

It's the same thing we heard for guys like Odell Thurman, Chris Henry, Dennis Weathersby, Cedric Benson, Reggie Nelson, Tank Johnson, and some of the other guys we've brought in. |

Want to revisit our "We should have signed a legit CB like Brandon Carr or Finnegan" arguement"? Wasn't Jason Allen being a quality CB a central part of your stance? |

And some people thought Burfict would be like an extra first round pick... It's true sometimes.

He will sit next to Sanu, White, and Peerman.

But, I list this because it makes it abundantly clear that the Bengals don't start players blindly based on salary. With 8 games left in 2012 and another 16 in 2013, the jury is still out on the value of signing Jason Allen. Last edited by mulligan; 11-08-2012 at 01:35 PM. |

Thurman was a 2nd round pick. Henry was a 3rd round pick. Benson was an UFA with baggage. Nelson was a trade. Tank was a UFA with baggage. Weathersby was a 4th round pick. Burfict was an UDFA. Joiner was an UDFA. The Bengals didn't have to trade any picks for them. Nor did the Bengals have to "use up" their existing draft picks to get them. Of your list of players, the only parallel would be Benson. All the others had a draft pick cost to them. Last edited by mulligan; 11-08-2012 at 01:35 PM. |

We all thought that Odell Thurman would end up a perennial Pro Bowl player too. |

In the 2005 draft, if the Bengals would have taken solid players without huge character flaws, they would have been better served than they were drafting Thurman & Henry. The Bengals got 1 year of play from Thurman (2nd). Henry (3rd) got more play, but it was a nightmare with off-the-field issues. Again, obviously, Burfict & Joiner were low risk, potential high reward. |
