Philosophically speaking, I think it was when the first permanent settlements took place in Southern Europe around 25 thousand years ago.

This is a good question. I believe it was when we started using notrogen base fertilizers. Without them the worlds population would never have gotten this high.

You know anthropology once held that the first thing that happened to change us from a hunter gatherer society was the discovery of agriculture, which then lead to permanent settlements. Sounded logical, but more recent evidence has shown that permenant settlements developed first and perhaps even 5 to 10 thousand years before agrarian societies show up in the record. Several theories have been put forth such as religious ceremonies leading to a congregate of people massing in one particular spot for some reason, (their favorite God was there they figured), and as a result permanent settlements developed, or perhaps something related to a gathering of people itself, like an abundance of females in one location with which to mate. First drawn by who knows what, but like the old saying goes, give them the water and they'll drink it. So the thinking goes, the females were there and kept em coming back. Understanding that the typical hunter gatherer tribe may have had 25 people in it which would have been a very large group. Obviously any gathering of a substantial amount of people, expotentially increased the odds of finding suitable mates.

No one is really sure but the archaeological record shows permanent settlements came first, then sustained agriculture. It's pretty much turned the science upside down for the moment.
