My gf wants an SLR thing for christmas. I guess my choices are the canon t3i or nikon d3100 (similar in cost). I'll probably get one of those bundle things that come with bag, extra lense, memeory card, stand, etc.
Any recommendations? Are there better places for bundles? Or maybe a different camera that performs better for the same price? This is about what i'm looking at for cost: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00..._ya_os_product |

I am by no means a camera buff. However, I did buy my wife a Nikon D3100 last year for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. I never thought she'd use a camera so much. This is hard to say after spending so much $$$ on a camera, but it was money well spent.

I have a Nikon D3 that I use at work and a D90 at home. I love Nikon's and would recommend them to anyone. Pretty much any Nikon SLR is a good one.

Just bought my wife a Nikon D7000. I tell you how she likes it after she opens it on Xmas morning.

Some general observations.
Canon has the best lenses, bar none. The L Series is all that and a bag of chips. And with cameras, the lense is the most important part (and what lense to chose varies a lot on what you're shooting). Canon, in my opinion, also makes better cameras. I shoot 200-300 shots a week and have for five or six years with my T3. Taken it out in the rain, it's been hit by no telling how many basketballs and footballs when I was covering sports. And it's just now giving me an issue focusing due to the mirror after years of hard use. On the other hand, Nikon makes great, dependable cameras and good lenses. And they do it for a lot less. You can get a Nikon with similar speeds and more megapixels for less money than a Canon. Lenses also cost less. Soooo.... my suggestion is to look at what she's going to be using it for. Shooting in the rain, dusty conditions, backpacking, etc., or if she's trying to shoot professionally... then I'd say Canon. If she's taking nature photos or whatever and doesn't need a camera that can survive dropping off a 20-foot tall band stand, I'd say Nikon. As for bundles, I'd recommend against it. It's cheaper to buy the body (which will come with the battery, charger and I think the strap), then pick up a memory card and whatever lenses are suited to what she's shooting. There's no sense in buying a bundle with a bundle with a long distance lense if she's planning on shooting up close portraits, or one with a close up lense if she's using it to shoot football games. Given holiday specials, though, you may find one of them where a bundle is just as cheap as buying the body only.

I guess to each his own. I am partial to Nikon, but that maybe because that's what I have to use at work. If we were issued Canons, I would probably like them more. They are both great cameras and you can't really go wrong with either one.

My work probably leans more toward Nikon, but there's not much difference in the quality of anyone's photos.
