Smoking around children...safe??

My wife works for CPS, and she went to a home for a safety inspection. She went to a house trailer that had two hospital beds with invalid matirarch and patriarch convalescing in them, along with 4 adults smoking.

Now, it is illegal for her to write into a safety plan for no smoking in the dwelling, as smoking in your own home is technically a legal act. But, do any of you really think that 4 adults smoking in a trailer, around children, is a safe environment?

No and sadly it happens far too much. Some people just don't think twice about it.

Wake up! This isn't the 70s! There's no excuses to be doing that in this day and age...smh

Some people exaggerate the harm of exposure to second hand smoke, but when it is in the house where you live every single day it can be a serious problem.

In fact most courts recognize this. I have seen many custody orders that prohibit smoking in the house where the child lives.

Seriously, where?

Asthma, allergies, cancer, emphasema. Your rights end when they directly harm someone else. There's no shortage of data proving there are numerous health issues for people who are around cigarette smoke.

Personally, I have no problem with people smoking in a restaurant. If it bothers me enough, I'll leave. There are enough restaurants that prohibit it, I don't think my choice should effect someone else's decision to smoke. But it's a little different with children who can't pick a different house.

As far as the OP, she can't do a safety plan for the no smoking. But... are they on oxygen? Perhaps she could use that for no interior lit flame?

Although I am a smoker, I smoke outside. I have to agree there should be no smoking in the house around children. I make the choice to smoke, children do not get to make the choice to breath second hand smoke.

I didn't ask her if the elders were on oxygen (although I have witnessed people on oxygen move teh hose...so they could smoke).

She did mention that the place in general was filthy, and that the guardian ad litem wouldn't even consider going into the place unitl it was cleaned up.

Smoking in a house with children is very harmful and causes all kinds of Heath risks ... But also feeding them fast food And sugary drinks and snacks is a health risk too....

I'm sure the Government can fix this problem....with legislation :-)

Im a smoker and if im smoking near my niece or nephew im outside in the open air.

As a smoker one thing that would **** me off to no end is when parents whould bring their kids into the smoking section of a restraunt.

You mean the same way we have dramatically reduced the number of people who smoke?

Or the way we have reduced the number of teen pregnancies?

Or the way we have reduced the exposure to aids?

Or the way we have made auto's so much safer?

Thank god we have a government to address these issues because individuals were helpless to do anything about these problems without government support.

It doesn't take banning something to change people's behavior. All it takes is raising public awarness through education and public service announcemenmts. But it does take government assistance.

Now that's the $64 million question, isn't it? Actually, it's more like $275 Billion now. The same law that allows this allows frivilous malpractice suits through a loophole in the Tort Law. This is why I'm trying to find $14.3 million in savings for my company.

Yeah i know i messed this one up but im tired today...

But not all rights end with the preceived harm to others.

Parents have the right to raise their children the way they want. (like using prayer for healing instead of medicine... which can cause premenant harm or death to their children)

One can smoke in there car no matter who is riding in it.

And the word harm can mean more than just pyshical well being like One can eat themselves onto welfare which harms the tax payers but its still that persons right to do so.

But on the other foot you dont have the right to harm yourself either. Failed suicide attempts often lead to jail time.

You can sue anyone over anything, but you can not win unless the other party was at fault.

No...Those are good examples except for the fact that none of them are examples that dispute what Fred said.
