They must like hearing this story over and over because they ask him that question every national interview. They'll probably ask him to juggle again in the interviews leading up to the game. It's a shame they can't find any other interest in the duo.

You think this is true? Kinda makes sense I guess to ask your #1 pick which QB he wants, but it still caught me by surprise. I never knew they gave AJ a say in all of that right after they drafted him. Kinda cool.
His answer would not have mattered because Jay wanted Dalton. End of story.

As far as the Mallett stuff goes, who knows what he will end up as in the NFL. He very well could be a better QB than Dalton once he gets the chance.
True.

That said, I remember there was talk about the Bengals getting Julio Jones and some of the other QBs that would still be on the board. The only specific QB I remembered being a possibility outside of Dalton was Ponder.

I also remember hearing about Mike Brown being hot to trot for Mallet. Given Mike's dismal failures in picking QBs (Klingler, Akili Smith come immediately to mind), I was really nervous Mallet would be wearing the Bengals uni.

Mallet could do worse than to learn from Brady. Although I get the strange vibe he won't be playing for NE much, and would ply his trade with another team.

I'm certain A.J. had no voice in the Bengal's draft picks, however. And, he's the type of player that would tow the company line.

I remember Gruden saying this in an interview a long time ago, after the draft. I will have to go back and dig it out but Gruden said he asked AJ who he thought they should take with the 2nd round pick and AJ said "Dalton."

I don't think it was so much him *picking* the team's QB.. but probably more like letting the player that people called the most talented WR in the draft since Calvin Johnson give his opinion. Not that it made the decision, but I am sure they were probably happy to hear that their #4 pick wouldn't have any kind of problem with Dalton. You don't want your potential uber-talented WR to hate your QB.

Plus I remember that too Bonnie. Jay had mentioned it in the past.

21. Eric Ried, S
37. Jamar Taylor, CB
53. Travis Frederick, C
84. Jamie Collins, OLB
115. Montee Ball, RB

Man... FA has really made me edit the crap out of my Wishlist/Draft... and not really for the better.

This was probably one of those interview questions (when the Bengals asked him), where you are just trying to get some insight into the guy you thinking about drafting near the top of the draft. They weren't using his answer to inform their decision about which QB to draft; it is much more likely they were trying to see how much attention Green paid to the rest of the football universe, was he a student of the game, etc.

For example, if he says I'd like my current college QB (whoever that was, i don't recall) then you might conclude that AJ Green is a physical freak but otherwise has no clue. If he says Andy Dalton with little explanation, then you know he's smart enough not to disagree with Jay Gruden's publicly stated opinion that Dalton would be a good fit for the offense he wanted to run. If he says QB X (Dalton or whoever) AND has some reasonably informed reason (throws he's good at, catchable ball, extends plays, whatever...) you have a totally different perspective on Green's intelligence/awareness/coachability, etc.

In my field (college teacher) we almost always ask potential hires what class they would design if they could teach anything they want. There isn't a right/wrong answer and they wont' get to teach whatever they want unless they have so little imagination they pick a generic class that every college offers; but, you learn a lot about what they like, how they think about our field, how they approach teaching etc in how they answer the question. Asking Green which QB he wanted was the same kind of thing, IMHO.

I still think this was a mutual Gruden brother pick............ and a great pick it was. I think they might have could have asked AJ if he thought Dalton would be a good pick or AJ's thoughts on the matter.. I still remember that John Gruden QB Camp with Andy, when I think John showed a little bias with Andy being his favorate and most NFL ready QB out of college.
