Default We might actually have a ROOKIE hold out!

So as I've sat during the dead zone (term I use for end of june through july of no football) I thought I would for sure hear that the Bengals finally signed Brandon Thompson.

NOPE! Still haven't...so who thinks he'll be signed before camp? 2 weeks left. Also the question has to be asked...WHY IS A 3rd ROUNDER NOT SIGNED!

There are still quite a few 3rd rounders not signed.

I bet both sides are just waiting until thompson gets here for training camp to sign

He'll be signed before camp. There is a small situation where the person drafted before him is making less than the person drafted after him. I would guess that is the reason that he isn't already signed. I would bet that they have him in within the next week or so though.

It's not on him?
He's going to have a slotted spot, but there are still 3rd rounders around him who don't have contracts because of a weird system of it

Here's two articles that try to explain the 3rd round conundrum. We're not the only ones with the problem.

http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2012...ookie-signings

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...still-unsigned

In a new-look NFL with a rookie wage scale, draft picks are signing at a furious and record-setting pace. One oddity to the madness, however, is perfectly exemplified by the Buffalo Bills: they've got all of their choices under contract, save for third-round pick T.J. Graham.

Why would the third-round pick be the most difficult to agree to terms with? It's a strange thing to ponder, but ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss may have provided the answer last week.

"Talked to one agent who said negotiations with prospects drafted in the third round have been more challenging than the first round," Reiss wrote in a May 13 column. "The reason, according to the agent, is that first and second-rounders receive their full slot allocation, while fourth- to seventh-rounders don’t. That puts the third-rounders right in the middle."

First-round picks get four-year deals that are fully guaranteed, and second-round picks still get contracts that average over $1 million in annual salary, plus multi-million dollar signing bonuses. From there, contracts are meager - and, apparently, not worth what the rookie wage scale says they can be worth. For third-round picks, who are stuck between the good contract rounds and the bad ones, it's apparently trickier than with other draft picks to get fair deals.

Last year, third-round pick Kelvin Sheppard was the last Bills draft pick to sign his contract, joining the team on July 30 after missing the opening practice of training camp. He signed a four-year, $3 million contract with a $690,000 signing bonus.

The good news is that Graham likely won't be without a contract for much longer - but for those of you who were wondering why the Bills' last pick to sign in the last two years has been the third-round pick, now you know why.

Not sure when Thompson will sign, but I know Lamar Miller signed his contract awhile ago and hasn't missed any offseason training.

Hope the coaches & gm's made the right call between those two. I am not sold that they did though, not yet at least.

Doesn't he play for one of those 5 bunnies scheduled in the first 6 weeks ?

Has Thompson missed anything to this point? I'm pretty sure he hasn't. Also, who cares about Lamar Miller? Especially since he was a 4th rounder when this discussion is about a 3rd rounder with several teams having trouble signing players from that particular round.

Also, another reason he hasn't been signed yet is because everyone is on vacation.

Not sure I follow. Are you suggesting he's a bad player because he was drafted by a bad team?

The Lamar Miller interest is because a lot of us thought Miller should have been the pick when Thompson was chosen.

We had a great draft, and Thompson is probably a good player, but our need for more speed at running back was a big need in the eyes of many. Miller was the fastest rb in the draft. It's just a point of interest to watch the two develop.

More interest is generated also by the fact that this pick is what we got for passing on DeCastro, and sliding back to take Zeitler. I'm high on Zeitler, too, but passing on DeCastro was a pretty gutsy move, and then he ends up with the Steelers.

I'm not really critical of the move, it could turn out to be great for us. It's just interesting to watch and follow.

No, am saying they may be improved with the addition of him, Chad, Jonathan Martin, Oliver Vernon, and BJ Cunningham. Am looking forward to attending the game actually.
Think Miami is on the rise and glad we have them early.

I don't think there's much of a chance he won't sign by camp.

Only 13 days away from having silliness like this end and football talk begins. He'll be there.

I'm sure he'll be in before camp. There isn't a whole lot of wiggle room with the slotted contract structure.

being a 3rd round holdout wouldnt be very smart because your not a lock to make the team.
