He will fill in Leonard's role this season, and then take over GE's role next.

Lifer as a part time back and specialist. Not that that is a bad thing for such a late pick. Good selection by the Bengals.

I am siding with Leather here.

Don't get me wrong, would love to have Herron on Special Teams and would be delighted if we get a healthy Scott. Hey, but it is great to have choices and we now have them. Rex can always be protected on the Practice Squad until someone is injured.

If Rex sticks he will be an instant fan favorite. As will Gio and the Eastern Block.

Hate to say it, but as a Buckeye fan, IMO, Burkhead>Herron. He isn't small, something like 212 lbs. He doesn't appear fast, but damn, he somehow seems to outrun/outmuscle players. Gio Bernard is our change of pace quick back, where I think Burkhead may very well be the backup to BJGE.

Yeah I would say Burkhead makes the roster and I welcome it he is a good player and an even better human being.

He looks pretty good but WHAT IS THAT NOISE IN THE BACKGROUND? I had to mute my speakers just to watch those clips.

ML called Burkhead a FB in the press conference. Either way I have seen him play a lot and I think he is a great pick. He will beat out Herron or Scott.

I attended the OSU/Nebraska game last Fall, and prior to Burkhead reinjuring his sprained knee, he was having a very good game. 70+ yards on just a handful of carries.

I was in the stands wondering why the heck this supposedly good Buckeye defense, couldn't catch this guy!?!?!?

This is the kind of player that is really easy to root for. Glad he is on the team!

I always tend to think back to Tampa's offense when Jay worked under Jon to get a glimpse of what he might be working on. Burkhead reminds me some of Michael Pittman and a little bit like Alstott. Both were tough runners who were suprisingly good in the passing game.

Not impressed with this pick. He's too slow and not powerful enough for the NFL. He won't make the team. Peerman, Bernard, and the Law-Firm will be our RB's with possibly Herron making it with special teams. FB will be a battle.

I dont mind the pick, but I see him as practice squad material this year.

BJGE, Gio, Peerman, Herron, & then Scott with his 1 year deal. One of these five wont even make the 53, and Peerman & Herron can play special teams as we all have seen.

Well, I have to say, he wasn't my guy. I thought we would go with Knile Davis or Lattimore late in the draft, but they went before our 5th round pick. I was surprised by Burkhead being selected by us and thought that he is slow.

Well he runs a slow 40, but if you watch his highlights, he doesn't seem to stop going forward. He doesn't look to dance in the backfield like Gio does. I don't hate the Gio pick but I am glad that we have a guy like Burkhead. I was wrong by saying that he won't break out any 60 yard runs as he did that regularly in Nebraska. Plus against OSU, he took over the game and won it and he did this in the 3rd quarter.

I have to say that is the type of back we need here. One that can put the team on his shoulders and take over a game and never quit even when it looks like a loss. I hope that spirit and fight continues for us and he is given a chance.

I still see BJGE and Gio as the go to RBs. Yet behind them I would like to see Burkhead.

Rex is a solid football player and I would not be suprised to see him make the team. As a junior he had 17 TDs and over 1500 yards from scrimmage in a top conference. As a senior he battled injury yet was still productive.

Teams have to have role players and it is that simple. He is a kid that will accept any role he needs to in order to help the team. He has even played some FB and could be another weapon lining up in two backs sets occasionally in that role as well. It was hard to do with Leonard because of his shoulder injuries.

I think Rex is better then our second round pick. I see a very powerfull runner. 22 consistently gets yards after contact which is difficult at any level of football. Time will tell. but this kid will make the roster IMO and be better then our second rounder.

Rex is not a fullback. He's never played that at Nebraska.

No disrespect but I do not think that Rex will be anywhere near what Gio will be. Gio could very well breakout the way Doug Martin did last year if given the opportunity. Have you ever seen him play? His vision and burst through the hole is phenomenal. He was the one player in the draft I hoped the Bengals would take. The kid is hungry as well he worked his tail off through countless setbacks in life and made it to where he is, he will not disappoint in any fashion.

Gio Bernard is an upgrade to Bernard Scott.
Rex Burkhead is an upgrade to Brian Leonard.

Gio/BJGE/Burkhead/Peerman

A 6th round draft pick is an upgrade to one of the better 3rd down RBs? Doubt it.

The one thing that Rex won't do nearly as well as Leonard is pass blocking. Leonard was very good at picking up blitzes on 3rd down. He also had a knack for picking up key first downs. I don't think he's that easy to replace.

How can people not like what the Bengals are doing with this pick?

Who is behind BJGE to be a tough yardage back?

Bernard?

Scott?

Peerman?

The Bengals have a bag of little nails (the three above)... but only one, so-so, "hammer" (BJGE). Burkhead has a great opportunity to play special teams for a year or two, fill in if there is an injury, and/or replace BJGE when his contract is done.

Personally, I feel like the Bengals have used their RBs backwards the past few years. They should use the little guys on the early downs and the bigger ones on the latter ones when the yardage is shorter. Burkhead can catch, run, block, is a hard worker, will play through injury, and fight for tough yards. None of the other backs on the roster can do that save for one, and he is not really a long term answer.

How could anyone hate this pick?! It makes incredible sense short and long term and is the type of pick elite teams make every year. Look, if college players can come in and unseat guys on your NFL roster... your roster stinks. The Bengals roster is strong, so there are few, if any, college guys that are coming in to replace anyone right off the bat. That's a great thing!

The reason I'm not completely sold on this pick is because I wouldn't cut the following guys to make room for him:

BJGE
Bernard
Peerman
Herron

I think Herron offers a lot on special teams. I suppose you could make a case for cutting Peerman. That may actually be what happens.

I've seen all of Rex's games. I don't that he's a great fit at the Pro level, but he's one hell of a person.

That's perfectly 100% fair in my eyes.

Burkhead is a 6th round pick. Sometimes 6th rounders don't make it or get put on the PS.

Peerman I would think sticks because of his special teams play.

Also, like the idea of Jack being a bengals fan via Burkhead. TEAM JACK!

Default Where is Rex?

In case you're wondering why we haven't heard from Rex Burkhead, he's been a little busy. From the front page story at the bottom in case you missed it.

Quote:
MORE REX AND JACK: Sixth-round pick Rex Burkhead began his first week as a Bengal in the Oval Office. Burkhead's good friend, seven-year-old Jack Hoffman, was invited to the White House by the President after Barack Obama heard about Jack's fight with pediatric brain cancer. Burkhead, Jack's favorite Nebraska player, struck up a relationship with Hoffman and he has been named the 2012 Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion.

“Being in there talking with the President was a weird feeling,” Burkhead told the web site for Uplifting Athletes. “Being in there with the Hoffman family and Jack and bringing about awareness to pediatric brain cancer is very important. It’s all about bring more awareness and raising money for more research.”

As far as I can tell it looks like we made it a point to draft very high character guys.

I haven't seen anything suggesting otherwise on anyone we picked.
