Default 2014 Early Full 3 Round Mock Draft

So this past week I was able to get with quite a few NFL writers and such to do a full 3 round mock. Each person had a team and was able to do trades and such, and we were timed in real time. The draft positions were determined by CBS, NFL, and ESPN power rankings. I included the trades on the side of each pick that was traded. So here's what we came up with.

Also, I was the Cincinnati Bengals, so let me know what you think about my picks. At the bottom, I'll explain why I picked each player.

Bengals 1st overall pick: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
Now, with this pick I went with BPA but I also believe that this will somewhat be a need for the Bengals. With Newman not getting any younger, Pacman dealing with this off the field issue (again), question marks around if Ghee and Kirkpatrick can remain healthy, just so many question marks with that secondary. I'm a huge fan of Purifoy and love his size, athleticism, and his coverage ability. He's extremely versatile and has shown up in big games. Purifoy is starting to get some looks on offense as a WR, but he also contributes extremely well in the special teams game. He forced 3 fumbles last season on special teams and also blocked two kicks. With his blocking ability along with Margus Hunt, that would make special team coaches go crazy and add another dynamic to this team. Although, the best thing about Purifoy is his ability to cover. He didn't record an interception last year, however, that was mainly due to him mirroring the receivers so well and quarterbacks just didn't throw to him much. It's hard to get the ball past him because of his size and Purifoy has the agility to turn and run with receivers. Has speed and movement skills that allow him to prevent the receivers from getting separation by getting in and out of breaks. Purifoy has a chance to be the best CB in this class, as we have yet to see his ceiling. He will have a chance to show how good he truly is by playing against LSU, Missouri, Georgia, and Vanderbilt. All of which have quality receivers and will challenge him. Purifoy is a very good coverage corner and can be left on an island. His versatility cannot go unnoticed as well. If he's there at 24, I would be all for getting Purifoy.

Bengals 2nd Draft pick (traded up): Adrian Hubbard, OLB, Alabama
My main focus with Alabama was CJ Mosley and Ha'Sean. However, watching some of their tape I was intrigued by Hubbard. I saw immense potential and someone who played extremely well on that defense. With the Bengals also having question marks at linebacker, I saw a guy who should have been taken in the first round. I just had to move up and take him. Hubbard has amazing measurables for a linebacker and is a SAM linebacker. He was arguably their best pass rusher last year and showed great instincts and forced turnovers. He was deceptively good in coverage, which could translate well onto the Bengals defense. His ceiling was just too high for me to just sit and hope for him to come to me, so I traded up. Hubbard plays quick and, oddly enough, I think he has a lot more to him. I could see him making a huge leap and actually be drafted higher than CJ Mosley. Hubbard will also have a chance to learn under James Harrison, one of the best pass rushing linebackers over the past decade. This helps solidify that defense more and gives the Bengals one scary linebacking corp. Wherever he goes, don't be surprised if he ends up putting a few Pro Bowl seasons together.

Bengals 3rd round pick: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
I'm not a huge fan of Kyle Cook, and I'm not sure how much I trust Robinson. Travis Swanson has been a solid player for Arkansas, as he has started in all 38 games of his college career. He has done a very good job with run blocking, and that's something the Bengals definitely need to work on. Especially with the new addition of Giovani Bernard. Swanson gives the Bengals a solid center and someone who can compete from day 1. His biggest strength, however, if his pass blocking ability. Dalton has struggles a lot when the center is blown up, but with Swanson playing that wouldn't happen as often. He will have to add some bulk, but he could very well be a solid player for the Bengals.

Just a couple thoughts for now.

1. Quite the QB controversy with the Jets. I think they give Smith 3 years before bringing in another QB.

2. If Cyrus Kouandjio is there when the Lions pick he ~has~ to be the pick. Backus is on his last crutch and Stafford must be protected better if they want to capitalize on that new contract they gave him.

3. Unless Andy leads us to the AFC championship game we better not pass on Manziel if he can be had with a trade back to the top of 2. If we do, I am breaking out the torches and pitchforks.

Good work though on such an early full 3 rounder. Look forward to more.

All of that happened on three consecutive possession, a 10-minute fusillade of fail that turned a one-possession game into a blowout loss...

My bad. I thought he had said he was giving it 1 last go. Riley Reiff better bring it then.

Don't want that guy anywhere near this squad. Not a fan of his game, think he'll get eaten alive in the NFL

I'd rather bring in Tebow than draft Johnny Football

I wouldn't go that far.

I was going with the kids will be kids line of thinking but if the most recent allegations are true then that's it. Sophomore or not, you have to know you can't be selling autographs. He had seemed dumb and young, but more and more he is looking like a spoiled, entitled rich kid.

For me it has nothing to do with his antics.

I'm not convinced he will be a good NFL QB just yet.

That's a lot of work, but can you give me a version where our Bengals pick last and win the ring? I think you have a lot of the needs in perspective. About a month ago I agreed that CB could be the 1st pick based on need and value at the position, but if Dre and Ghee play well then they may not go there 1st. We're still worried week to week about center, but they never draft one high enough. Is there a guard that can play center worth drafting in say the 2nd (end of the 2nd remember)? But yeah, LB still looks like a need going forward and it comes down to how Rey handles himself and if they wanna keep Burfict on the weakside long term. If Rey plays well, they'll at least take a long term replacement for Harrison.

As for the Dalton talk, I can't see himself falling on his face enough to draft a QB early, especially a talent that still acts like a kid in Johnny Football. Dalton is stable, young and cheap, can he regress that much? If Dalton has a down year, I can only see it happening because of injuries to the OL. He has too many solid short options and Eifert alone is gonna make his job easier. If anything, maybe they get in and fall short again and he gets a bunch of the blame. I could see them spending some money on a vet QB or if they're happy with Johnson they'll have an option to bench Dalton the following year if needed....but I really don't see Cincy drafting a QB early next year.

I hate trade predictions the day before the draft much less the year before lol. But if any team that has desperately tried to draft a good DE in the draft and failed so consistently I could see Jacksonville giving up Clowney, but I also think KC is better than 7th pick this year barring significant injuries anyways.

I don't think there is any way Manziel falls that far, but we better take him if there. He is a real talent and a super hard worker and football smart.

Its funny looking at this now and seeing how far some of these guys have risen and fallen.

I would love to get Trent Murphy in round 1....... This has him going in the third...

Yeah. I don't get why they kept him on the 53 man roster but never played him. The guy has good talent.

Gilbert was taken in the 3rd round here, he will most likely be taken in the 1st. Stephen Morris isn't a 1st rounder, nor Purifoy.

Bunch of changes, weird to look back on
