Bengals VS Bucs.....last year....worst call by an official in NFL history.....late in the 4th Quarter.....4th down......Justin Smith tackles the Bucs QB.....who in turn fumbled the football.....The Bengals came up with the ball....the official throws the flag......15 YD penalty for roughing the passer??????WTF?????The QB had possession of the ball....He wasn't even passing!!!!!!!!!!The Bucs get the ball back......run the final seconds offf of the clock......Bucs win.......WORST CALL EVER!!!!!!!!After the game........the official said, "I really should have called unnecessary roughness."........WTF? Remember now.....The Bengals only needed that one win.....and we are in the playoffs.......1 bad call cost us the season!!!!

Not only that, but it was a bad call in a season full of bad calls. I'd hardly say it was the worst call ever - the Testeverde phantom QB sneak for a TD for the Jets against the Seahawks where he was clearly a full yard short comes to mind - but it was one of many. If you look closely at all the teams that missed the playoffs by a game, you could probably make the same argument about a single play form one of their losses as well.
Sure, you could say the Bengals missed the playoffs because of a bad call. You could just as easily say it was because of a missed field goal, a botched extra point or an ill-timed DUI. There were a lot of things that contributed to the team missing the playoffs, many of which they actually controlled. Hopefully, they don't let such opportunities slip away this year and make their return to the postseason.

That was a terrible call and there is no way anyone should be defending it. Carey is one of the worst refs and that was not an isolated incident for him.
However, they still had chances to make the playoffs at the end of the year and they just blew it so I will not say we missed the playoffs just because of that call. |

You're wrong on a few points there, Sparky. The ref called the wrong penalty, yes - but the one he meant to call (Unneccary roughness) is also a 15 yard penalty. That being said....It wasn't even that. The QB's helmet barely hit the ground - but it's called momentum. You have to allow for that. The flag should never have been thrown. The game should have been yours. The quote from Marvin Lewis after the game was priceless, "I guess you have to coddle the QB to the ground". AWESOME! BUT....it was hardly the worst call ever. That would have to go to the only time in my life where the league official had to apologize for a call made by another ref. When Polamalu picked off Manning in the 2005 playoffs, and it was ruled so on the field. Should have been Steeler ball at mid field. Referee Pete Morelli ruled it incomplete after SIX MINUTES of review (pst...he's only suppose to have 90 seconds). The Colts went on to score and get the 2 point conversion. So, what should have been a 21-10 victory ended up being 21-18 with the outcome in doubt. All because Morelli drank the bong water. Also.....many Steeler fans here (not me, but many) took pleasure in saying that it was us that knocked you out of the playoffs, since we were your last loss. The comeback by many Bengal fans was, "Every loss we had contributed equally to us not making the post season". So, I'll side with the Bengal fans and say that all your losses kept you out of the post season. We may have driven the final nail in the coffin (as Baltimore did to us) but our nail meant no more than any other nail. Finally, if you had scored TD's in the second half instead of settling for FG's, that call wouldn't have mattered. |

It was a horrible call. I don't understand how you can call roughing the passer or unneccesary roughness on that. If that's unneccesary roughness, then you can call unneccesary roughness on 95% of the tackles made in the NFL last year.
However,I can't say that blown call was the reason we missed the playoffs. We could have still stopped the Bucs, but we didn't. We blew a FG against the Steelers. How many blown coverages for TD's in the second quarter of games could've made the difference between winning and losing? People tend to latch onto last minute stuff like this, but last time I checked,a TD in the first 2 minutes of a game counts the same as a TD in the last 2 minutes. A win or loss in week 1 counts the same as a win or loss in week 17. |

The Bengals didnt deserve to make the playoffs last yr. They found every way they could to miss them. Besides the TB game there was:
two turnovers in the first 5 mins vs BAL blowing a 21 pt halftime lead vs SD letting michael vick beat us...with his arm! blowing the extra pt in DEN not showing up vs IND missing a 38 yd FG vs PIT We would have definitely been one and done in last yrs playoffs. Although we would have at least looked better than the ravens did.

You're right.....You may have been one and done last year if you had made it - but it would have been entertaining. In whatever game you would have been in, it would have been a shootout. |

Was that call a terrible call? The answer is a resounding yes, but at the same point in time our offense didn't show up, if they did we would have won, and they didn't and we lost.

Yes....there were many other games in which we should have won, but you can't deny that call cost us that game.

What cost us the game was also letting them score afterwards. As unfair as that call was, we still had the chance to stop them because they needed a TD to tie it, and the point after to get ahead.

Nothing comes to mind as the worst call ever (though that Testerverde one is pretty close). On a side note, does anyone remember a few years ago where the Saints (I think it was the Saints, but it may have been the Jaguars or versus the Jaguars) were playing and were down by 7 points and they were receiving a kick with no time on the clock. They do one of those gadget, heavy-lateral kick returns that usually doesn't work, but in this case they did and they scored a TD!! Everyone's waiting for OT and the kicker misses the XP and the game ends. Does anyone remember that? |
