As cheap as Mike Brown is, I was surprised to find this out. Then again I think the citizens of Cincinnati ultimately footed the bill with their tax dollars.
Obviously footing is an issue this time of year. Hopefully, a clean field will help the Bengals generate some offense. Last edited by dtrance; 01-07-2010 at 10:11 AM. |

yes......yes I did.
I remember reading about it when they were replacing the real grass with the new turf field. lots of drainage and heating conduits were laid under the new stuff.

If it were cheap I would imagine every team in the North would have it. Excluding domes of course. Apparently there are only two fields that are heated. M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and at PBS. Per the front page article.

Hate to disagree with a front page story but I'm pretty sure every stadium that has field turf has a turf conditioning system that includes some form of heating.

Because obviously, Giant Stadium's turf was not heated. Or the heat system was not working that day. |

Exactly, and like I said in another thread, it seems our team wasn't prepared for it. Our Bengals were sliding all over the place, while the Jets were as sure footed as if it were 80 degrees and sunny outside. I feel it played a huge role in how our team played. They didn't even want to be there playing in that meaningless game, and once they hit the field, they pretty much threw in the towel. That frozen turf is a joke, but the Jets are used to it, and know what cleat is best for it, while we were left sliding around like hockey players.

If I'm going to choose between trusting Hobson and trusting you, I'll go with Hobson.

I think there are only two fields that have this feature. Ours, and Baltimore's.
It's been mentioned repeatedly on ESPN. I think it puts Cincy in a pretty good light. I also like the idea of decent footing for all. |

Wouldn't you think Coles would've mentioned to the team about the slippery conditions and what type of cleats were used for the field. |

I'm glad it's heated. Now no more excuses for slipping, tripping, sliding, broken feet, turf toe , whatever the hell that is anyway, falling down for no reason, stuck cleats, slipping when breaking off on routes, snapped ankles, unless of course someone falls on it, not being able to fire off the O and D lines, poor footing, skating, frozen shoe strings, I'm sure there are other things but these are just a few that we've had trouble with lately!
Let the game begin! Who Dey!

Yeah, they said that during the stadium tour I went to,
But the day I was on the field it didn't need to be on. It was summer and felt like a million degrees out there.

Trust who you will, but I guarantee you Cincinnati and Baltimore are not the only stadiums in the NFL with heated fields

I think most teams with turf conditioning play on natural grass, where as the Bengals and Ravens use it with field turf.

Brown isnt as cheap as we like to pretend he is. He is more frugal than cheap. He doesnt own a team in a big market. He cant spend more than he pulls in.
Paul Brown is an amazing stadium. Brown would love to spend the money on big FA, if he had it. Remember, he still has to make a profit. |

I am wondering if the radiant heat from the turf makes it slightly warmer for the players. How does the water drain when the snow is melted and how dry or slippery is the field in that circumstance? Maybe some of you who work there or have taken a tour might know the answer to that.
As a bit of an aside about bad weather conditions, I would think that the stadium itself cuts the wind a little bit. What other sideline heating items are there besides the turf? I think they have heaters for the players and even special boxes to keep the helmets warm. I wonder if a roof would have improved attendance this year? Personally, I enjoyed the lovely fall day with the fly over by the Air Force plane when I went to the stadium this year.

It isn't taxed. However the construction of the stadium was subsidized by the city of Cincinnati, and consequently the tax dollars of it citizens. I'm sure the facilities would have been set up differently had Mike Brown footed the entire bill.
