Shula off base
By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports November 6, 2007 Every year, the 1972 Miami Dolphins pop champagne when the final undefeated team loses, preserving their 17-0 squad as the last to enjoy a perfect season. It's a rite of autumn in the NFL. But now, here comes the New England Patriots, and if ever the cork was staying put, this is the threat. They've blown out eight opponents, beat their only perceived equal on the road, and now stare down history in a way perhaps like no one previously. So leave it to Don Shula to start the tarnishing, start the mud slinging. The Hall of Fame former Dolphins coach claimed to the New York Daily News that because the Pats were caught filming the New York Jets defensive signals from the sidelines in the season opener – a violation of league rules – that a 19-0 season would be marred and that an asterisk could be attached to it. "The Spygate thing has diminished what they've accomplished," Shula told the paper. "You would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They've got it." http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...yhoo&type=lgns

Shula looks like a *******. The only reason I hope the Pats run the table is that so he and all the bitter old men from that team with nothing left in life but to root against an undefeated season will just go away.

His whining is horrible and shameless..let it go, it's not like the Pats had to cheat to beat the Jets

I mean, Shula may have said other things that warrant some Shula-bashing (having a son coach the Bengals is another good reason to bash Shula), but what you posted is not one of them. |

Hey I just put the article out there for discussion. The sportswriter makes a case against him. Click on the link and read the whole thing, if you want.

In any event, from what was posted, I don't see what people are getting all huffy and puffy for. If anything, people should be highly skeptical of the Pats success this season. I am. It's one thing to win games, but to be this dominant? Hmmmmmmmm. |

Re: Shula weighs in on Pats cheating
Lets see the dolphins were number 1 with 359.7 yards total offense per game.
Defense was number one with 235.5 yards per game Dolphins were 2nd in interceptions, with 26, behind Pittsburgh with 28 2007 Patriots already are avg 428.7 yards per game on offense.Number 1 Defense is number 5 at 275.2 So after week 9 the Patriots have already well surpassed the Dolphins, who only played 11 regular season games back then. So what does this prove, absolutely nothing, The Patriots still cheat and should change their name to Benedict Arnold another famous person from NE! ![]() |

![]() And you know what makes it really ironic seriously. The Patriots finished last with a 3-11 record. 35 years later it is totally reversed, and if Miami can pull off three wins, (long shot there) it will be really spooky especially if the Pats go undefeated! Re: Shula weighs in on Pats cheating
Wow, you talk about freaky. Look at the standings for the teams that year, Granted the division was totally different and they only played 14 games, but the similarities and differences are amazing.

I think Shula has forfeited his right to say anything in this matter given his cheat filled tenure as head of the competition committee. In 1982 as head of the competition committee he watered down the field and didn't cover it with a tarp leading up to the AFC Championship game that became the so-called "Mud Bowl" game. During his tenure on the "competition committee" his teams always were the least penalized and seemed to receive the benefit of the doubt on most calls, I highly doubt the Dolphins played any cleaner than their opposition yet they always won the penalty yardage battles. As another example the fumble his team lost during the mud bowl which was overruled. It escapes me how someone with that documented level of cheating could call out Bill Belichick. While there are ways to counter a team filming you there is little you can do when a coach has wrecked the field intentionally and the Super Bowl game is scheduled for the following week.
