He was fined $141,176, no suspension. Almost $150,000, wow. What did Joey do again? Use the ball as a prop when he was celebrating a TD.
$32Million contract... $141,176 fine... seems about right. Ha! You think Goodell will have a show on NFL Network where he comes on andtells us the reasoning behind his punishment rulings? Kinda likewhen the head of the refs explains close or questionable calls afterthe weeks over?

They would show footage of the Vegas tape and Goodell would pause it and chime in with... "You see right there, he swings with his left hand. His left. As we all know ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Porter is right handed. If he had meant to do serious harm he would have clearly thrown the right, I mean Mr. Jones was wide open for the right hook which quite possibly would have ended the situation before the authorities even got there. Thereby I have to assume that Joey wanted to get caught and was, in a sense, turning himself in. Now when we factor that in and carry the 2 we get $141,176."

Goodell is a Joke and for being the commish for this short of a time, he has already shown me he is the worst commisioner this league has ever had.

Can you even name any previous commissioners not named Rozelle or Tagliabue without looking it up? I can honestly admit that I couldn't.
Well I don't think he's crossed into "joke" status just yet... but he seems to have an odd way of picking out punishments for players. I still wonder why he was so quick to act on PacMan Jones, but the whole Vick thing has dragged out for a while... and the charges are much more serious with Vick. Suspected participation in Dog Fighting vs. alleged traffic violation... First the dude gets caught with weed in an airport (idiot) - which then leads to an investigation at his house where they find dead dogs and fighting rings... Hope Vick doesn't get a parking fine, because THAT will be what does him in! [H]

[H]
It seems the punishments are equal to the amount of PR damage taken by the league, not the crimes actually committed. Major news outlets like ESPN quickly swept the Jones/Porter incident under the rug when witnesses and video evidence showed that Jones commited no wrong-doing in the affair. When the story first broke, there was a bit of hype behind it,as they were trying to use this to further their point about the Bengals being a team of thugs. However, most people think Tank Johnson got off light on his suspension, considering the severity of his crimes. Again,Tank didn't the amount of media coverage that Chris Henry,Pac-Man Jones,or Michael Vick is getting, now. It's stupid to me. Why doesn't Goodell just let Chris Berman hand out the suspensions? |

PacMan got suspended largely due to his not reporting a felony arrest to the team, an unprecedented violation of the CBA. Why does everyone constantly forget that?!?! As far as Vick goes it hasn't even been a week since the indictment was handed down. Pacman wasn't suspended within a week of his last incident. The Vick thing is huge and I'd much rather have them take their time and be methodical regarding it than rush and do a halfassed job. If they suspend Vick too quickly and he's exonerated (albeit unlikely) the lawsuit would be immense and could bring down the whole system Goodell is trying to implement. I find it highly likely that Vick will be suspended at some point before the season as more details come to light. If Vick doesn't end up being suspended I'll rethink my whole position on Goodell. I just don't think he's had enough time to make a decision on Vick yet. |

I just don't think he's had enough time to make a decision on Vick yet.
cal, here is my problem with the entire Vick thing.....first off he should be suspended for the entire year. My problem is that the NFL has said already they won't do anything until the legal side runs it's course....he won't be suspended unless pressure is put on the league offices. Secondly it has been reported that the commisioners office is now along with the Falcons trying to convince Vick to take a leave of absence on his own....and the kicker is they will still pay him for the season. That is where my big time problem sits with this whole thing. Why should Vick walk away on his own and still get paid?????? He should lose his salary and be suspended for the year. Because he is a "star" in the leagues eyes they don't want to do anything which is a joke.....the same thing with the porter decision......the dolphins apparently talked to the commisioner asking he not be suspended etc. because of his "Star" status he wasn't. These aren't the only things I weigh my decision about the commisioner on. Other decisions he's throwing around i dislike about him are the idea to move the super bowls over seas, the idea to move regular season games over seas are just a couple more of his idiotic ideas that i disagree with. Goodell is two faced, a player with a federal indictment against him should be punished in some sort of way.....but goodell already put his foot in his mouth when he said they wouldn't do anything until the legal issues ran their course......he can suspend him today and it wouldn't change my mind about Goodell because he already made it crystal clear that if your a star in the league he won't do anything.....if Vick gets suspended it will only be due to the pressure the league got from outside the league. Goodell made it perfectly clear he is a hypocrit when it comes to suspending players. |
well I can't name them all....but i can name two others...... Jim Thorpe (only because I read his life story when i was younger....he was my favorite athlete of all time (he was the very first commisioner)....wish i could of watched him play. and the other Bert Bell....he was basically the founder of the NFL as we know it today.....when he took over there were several different leagues...he took those leagues and formed one league in the 50's, the NFL. I guess i'm a geek when it comes to this stuff....he also was responsible for getting football games televised....and an interesting fact about him, he died at a football game....it was a steelers game, can't remember who they were playing though. (they probably shot him up with roids at halftime lol) The rest though i don't know. |

I just don't think he's had enough time to make a decision on Vick yet.
You're right Cal, I was exaggerating too much on that. I do think it's lame that when he finally got pegged it was for some BS traffic violation that is now in contention. Vick's accusations are much more disturbing to the league and to the NFLPA - granted they are just accusations right now, but due to the severity of the situation, if he was 100% clean of this, he'd be able to show or say something to defend his innocence. Telling the Falcons that he's sorry this is getting bad press and that he feels "devastated" by the whole thing doesn't sound to me like "I'm innocent, this is a false claim!" One way or another, he was involved,.. he knows it, and he knows that they will eventually find out how he is linked. I think Goodell is being too submissive in this situation. But then again maybe he's just waiting to make sure he has all the facts first before he makes a decision. Like I said in the previous post, I don't think he's achieved "joke status" yet, but he's being kind of ambiguous with his decision making with fines and suspensions. Business wise he has to make sure he's clear to the players, which I'm sure he's doing, but he should also make it a point to explain to the fans.. aka... stock holders so he minimizes any bad PR for himself.
