Default Thank you Carson Palmer, for quitting, and making us get better!

No this isnt another thread ABOUT palmer, and wanting him to come back etc. This is a thanks, for making some changes happen around here, albeit coincidentally. This is a thread about cause and effect, carson causing brown to change, and the effect it had on our offseason, and the fact we are finally looking to be moving on, getting younger, and not drafting a QB 3 years from now, but instead getting on with our future now.

I just want to take a moment to thank carson palmer, former bengals QB. I'm glad he did what he did, in him forcing his hand in retirement, we drafted AJ green, got rid of ocho, drafted a great young prospect in Andy Dalton, and got a new offensive corrdinator. We all know this offseason would have never caused this much change had palmer not forced brown into this situation. I'm extremely happy with dalton as our future franchise quarterback, and AJ green as our new #1 recevier (the guy abused chris gamble, a veteran corner, all night long).
Now I know dalton hasnt been selected the AFC rookie of the year yet, nor has he been voted into the pro bowl, but this team can ONLY get better and boy does he look like he is going to have a decent rookie year. His deep routes need work, we know this, and they WILL only get better as time goes on, as he develops a rapport with his receivers, learning everyones tendencies. And to think we got dalton 30+ picks after cam newton makes me so happy, seeing as he was obviously the better QB tonight. Dalton already has shown he can read an NFL defense in the blink of an eye, he can get the ball out quickly, and knows when the blitz is coming and audibles to a hot route for his primary receiver. That deep ball is really ugly right now, but week 6, look out, those passes are TD's for 6. And unlike palmer, they arent pick 6 to the other team. thank god we got a good leader with the right attitude! WHODEY

If he continues at his current pace, I'd rather just thank the kid. Dalton can play some ball.

I wholeheartedly agree that if Carson hadn't shown his rage, similarly to Achilles withdrawing himself and his Myrmidons to their ships and the Greeks being pushed back and their ships being burned, nothing would have changed.

Still, not enough has changed. At some point it became evident to Agamemnon, errr... MB that THIS Achilles was not coming back (sort of lil brother Jordan getting decapitated in a game against the Squeelers or something which will never happen because he will be among the last cuts of the preseason) and he stopped changing things trying to appease him and the fans.

There is still NO GM for the Bengals organization. There is still no real scouting department. The Bengals still cannot attract major talent at its peak (or even retain it - see J-Jo) despite having a boulder made of gold that they are sitting on still under the cap.
As for Dalton being an improvement over Carson, before I start weaving him a conqueror's crown I would like to see him win at least one or two regular season game, maybe break a couple of CP's records, maybe win a division title or two?

Guys....this is preseason. That being said, this is the 3rd preseason game. The only one that "matters". Dalton showed me that he CAN be the starting QB for the Cincinnati Bengals. He had the poise to stay in the pocket, and ran like hell when he couldn't. He was accurate, had zip on the ball, threw the deep ball to AJ twice (1 complete, 1 overthrown), and led the young Bengals on successful drives.

Green....oh lord. Not to hijack the thread but WELCOME TO THE NFL AJ GREEN!!! He is going to be a SUPERSTARRRRRRRRRRRR.

I cannot wait for week 1. Browns? Ha. Let's play football.

"This is preseason" is wasted on me....I'm still thinking 6-10. I still expect Dalton to take his lumps. But grading on any sort of reasonable curve with all things considered, the kid has looked good, better than can be reasonably expected imo, even in the Lions game really, ugly as that was.

Dalton was not a casualty for the team, meaning he did not turn it over, Kudos to John Gruden for a system that makes a Rookie look like a seasoned vet!

I'm as happy as anyone else, but this is the same Panthers team that Carson beat in a real game (last year) 20-7. I have a feeling this team will not be as bad as the 1st couple games, and not as good as this one. I'm still sticking to my 4-12 prediction.

Yeah, he sure was laid back on all those game winning drives that led us to a division title in 2009 huh.

Dalton has had ONE good half of football in the preseason and you guys are ready to crown him.

Unbelievable.

Wow, I don't even know how to respond to the OP.

What change are you talking about???

Drafting AJ Green - that's a normal Mike Brown move.

Signing a bunch of 2nd-3rd tier free agents (only to replace the ones we lost in Free Agency or to injury) - that's classic Mike Brown.

Leaving millions in cap space?

The only change that I saw was Mike letting Joseph go. That's was unusual.

We really aren't that much "younger"

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there hasn't been ANY change in the way the Bengals are doing business.

I disagree. I wouldnt credit Carson for change though.

...but A new OC is a huge change, all things considered.

And the team has gotten younger in the front 7 on defense and are heading towards youth in the secondary.

Youth at the skill positions on offense and youth on ST's.

Not sure what you're seeing, but those are big changes in this team.

The biggest change that is tangeable is that this is finally a team!

I dont know whether Carson has a role in that or not, but if you cant see that change then I dont know what to tell ya. ( with respect ).

Go back and read what the original post said:

This is a thread about cause and effect, carson causing brown to change,

Sorry, but there isn't any change in Mike Brown.

Yes, we have a new OC, but what other than that has changed?

We have a win over Carolina (the worst team in football) and all of a sudden there is this wave of change?

I like the fact that we took the best player in the draft at #4 overall. I like the fact that we drafted a QB in the 2nd round that APPEARS to fit our system.

But, most of these "youth movements" that you are talking about aren't really due to Mike Brown. We've gotten older in the secondary with the addition of Clements. Any of the free agents that were signed were picked up AFTER we lost guys.

Nothing has changed with Mike Brown. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.

I'll grant that is mostly true.

However, Brat is gone. While it should have happened 3 years ago, that's a major change that can't be discounted. And CP's move may deserve some credit for the change.

Wow that preseason win over the Panters really got you pumped. I'd bet that Dalton doesn't see the end of his contract as a starter. I also don't see how Palmer gets ANY of the credit you give him. His retirement had to do with BIGGER changes, not Ocho a new OC and a couple of rookies(which isn't really change since you draft new rookies every year).

Green's a stud. I love Gresham, Shipley and Big Andre when he's healthy. That's about all the positives I can find right now. I like getting Mays for what we gave up, but it's also likely he's not worth the $ we'll be paying him.

Change in FO = not a lot
Change in TEAM on field = very much
Does this = wins ????? we'll see

We weren't a team on the field last year, we were a 3 headed monster (9,81,85) all trying to be the one running the show.

The only thing that may have changed is attitude and desire. Carson is a very good QB, but he lost his desire to play here and a lot of folks always questioned his heart a little. By leaving it may have helped us in that way. Make no mistake though, if Carson 'wanted' to play here he would be the man, and the best QB for this team.

I have to laugh at the people that keep throwing Palmer into the "problem" mix when it comes to this team.

Chad and TO were a problem. Wrong routes, quitting routes etc...

Anybody remember the last time we played games that counted?

Chargers? Ravens?

How did Palmer look without TO and Ocho? The offense looked pretty good.

Palmer was not part of the problem when it came to the TEAM.

I'm not sure that we wouldn't be pushing for a wildcard spot this year if he was the QB.

I would agree. Carson would be PERFECT for the WC offense. He could get momentum with the shorter routes to backs and TE's and work himself into a groove. Instead we wasted Palmers talent with 2 runs then 3rd and longs.

Too bad. I can't blame Palmer for leaving. This organization is a circus.

It's easy to forget that Palmer helped make that bed, then couldn't lay in it !

Is Palmer a better pure QB than Dalton ? Probably

Did Palmer LEAD us to the promised land ?????
