Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
Those interested in a Pro-Bowl guard. RT @15miller: Carl Nicks said new contract has to be more than teammate J Evans $56.7 M dollar deal. You really think we will put that much money into a long term deal with him?

If we signed a deal similar to the Davin Joseph deal in Tampa, I'd be all for it. Make his cap hit huge to start, then it goes down. 2012 - 9,500,000 2013- 9,500,000 2014 - 6,000,000 2014 - 6,000,000 2015 - 7,000,000 2016 - 7,000,000 2017 - 7,500,000 Something along those lines. Cap isn't an issue in the next couple of seasons, but it will be. Last edited by ibengals; 02-21-2012 at 02:29 PM. |

So you give him $56.8mil. If it's an 8 year deal he'll still be younger than Bobbie was last season when the deal expires, and that $7.1 mil/year will be cheap in a few years.

I'm thinking it will also be in the Guaranteeing money as well. If we front load the first year like lets say he makes 14 million in his first year. Than it drops after.
BUT we gaurentee about 30 million. Something like that.

Re: Nicks speaks out about Contract he wants. Per Schefter
I think Nicks is better than Evans so yeah, he would be worth it. Show him the money. ![]()

Definitely down with front-loaded contracts for FA this year.
Assuming, of course, we sign a FA worth his weight in salt.

You don't get the chance to sign a pro-bowler every day, if you have a player that is arguable top 5, then you should pay them arguably top 5 money.
And to those that worry about needing to resign Andy and AJ, you won't have to worry, the way we structure contracts there will be plenty to go around. (think about the 2005 bengals offense and their contracts)

I don't see how you can justify not going after Nicks with an "all in" mentality? Especially this franchise. It's painfully obvious our interior Oline is terriable, and has been for awhile. Cook would probably be fine if we got quality play from the guard positions.
I know this is a pipe dream, but an immediate move to secure Nicks would do so many things for this franchise! 1. Tells the fans that MB and co. are commited and through F'n around. 2. Immediately improves the O. Better Oline play= better play on offense all around. 3. Sends a message to rest of team that ownership and staff are commited to winning now. 4. Sends a message to other FA's that this team is commited to winning. 5. Opens up the draft for us 6. Better Oline play also helps Dalton to get better, and will ease along his progression. It just seems to SCREAM right move for this franchise to make. However, I'm not ignorant. This is not a move that is charateristic of MB or this franchise. I've been impressed with Brown recently, but until he makes a move like this one early in FA it's the same ol' same ol' as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't have to be Nicks. For me the Guards are top priority so it's the move I like best. Still, Wallace, Foster (provided either is available), or a top CB would do just as well. Just MAKE SOME F'N NOISE in free agency for once please!!

Yes I want him, but are they going to pull their crap and not extend Andre, or other guys if they do?
We didn't tag/sign Steinbach because we just paid our 2 tackles.....

This team, these fans, this city, these coaches, the QB, and everyone involved needs for MB to send a message to them by making a move for an O-lineman like Nicks ! I believe it's our most pressing need bar none ! Another season of empty seats is gonna be hard for everyone to swallow.

Well with Bobbie's $4 million or so a year coming off the books, we're really only investing 3-4 more million a year at that position. Plus, it protects Dalton and makes the running game infinately better.
I could argue that with Nicks and another Guard that we really don't even need to make a splash at WR. (Although Manningham, Meachem, or Wallace would be nice.) |

I would absolutely give it to him. He would help solidify the Oline, which would make this whole offense perform much better. Add in Meachem and a new RB, and this team should perform much better than last year.

Personally, I think that making the playoffs last year and there still being empty seats has the front office knowing that they have to be proactive. Guard was our biggest weakness on offense and I hope that they see that.
We can give Nicks that kind of money and I'm hoping that any team that would want him doesn't have the cap room to give him that kind of money.

The bottom line is we need a good line and have to be able to run the ball to beat good teams. That's why we were 0-7 against winning teams this past season.

Get Nicks, then go get Wallace, and then draft Trent. Talk about 3 nice additions to our offense.

And we need to eat up cap space. Bring the man in and give him a seat.

Dream Scenerio........I might pass out. These two moves would instantly turn this team into a long term contender. imo

I don't think he'll be a Bengal if he wants those kind of numbers.

Can you imagine? Turning our major weakness into a strength in the blink of an eye? And with aging foes in our division, we could dominate both lines of scrimmage for years to come! (Assuming we reward our D-Line with contract extensions... )
