Supposedly the Reds and Joey Votto have agreed to an extension. I guess this means no more Brandon Phillips after this season.

This is terrible news... His range is supposedly in the lower 200 million... We aren't the yankees... Guess this means we'll have Votto and no one else for the next couple of years... BP will be traded off before this year... Makes no damn sense

I wouldn't say it is a terrible move just because of that. It just means that the Reds have to be smarter with money. Don't pay players like Cordero, Harang, and Arroyo 12+ million a year EVER. Replace those players with 6 million dollar pitcher and we can afford Votto.

I love Brandon Phillips as much as anyone, but Votto is vastly more important to fielding a competitive team, thus filling GABP, and increasing revenue.

I would rather keep Phillips a couple more years. I think Phillips is the real cog of this team, he is the face of the team where Joey is simply the best player. Joey does not have the charisma or fan interaction to draw crowds to GABP that phillips does.

I also don't agree with paying 1 person 20 - 30% of the entire payroll. Can anyone say Ken Griffey Jr?

P.S. The thread title is misleading, they haven't agreed to anything. The story is that they are nearing an agreement.

Votto is a HUGE star in Cincinnati. Brandon Phillips is my favorite player. He is not gonna come cheap either. Sure, he won't get Votto money, but it will be a pretty good sum! I am glad they got Votto locked up (if they finish the deal). If I cannot have Phillips, then I want Votto and vice versa.

I think the Reds are doing great things with getting Latos, MadDog (although he is out for the season), Chapman a couple of years ago, and Marshall. I know that part of it is because they want to sell tickets. If the Reds fans, including myself, would just stop being bitter and go to some games, then our payroll would not be such an issue.

I think he does, but I do agree that not to the extent that Phillips does. I am gonna be one bitter dude if they don't re-sign him. He's is so much fun to watch. He reminds me of Roberto Alomar with his defense. I cannot remember one game I watched last year in which Phillips did not make a highlight reel play. I think he is the best defensive player at his position, and it is not even close. I'm not just saying that because he is a Red.

If Reds fans don't want to see this team become the Joey and Scrubs show, they need to go to games.

Fill that stadium. I live in NC, but I will be going to at least 1 game this year, and sitting in the Diamond seats, so I'm doing my part.

I'm not sure when I am going, but I plan on making a couple of trips. Would love to meet up with some other Reds fans from here. My daughter is 10, and she wants to go to a game. My girlfriend has only been to Clippers games. She is not a big sports fan, but she is slowly getting into baseball. She knows all the players and will watch a game with me sometimes.

People would have complained had we not signed him to a deal. Now people dont want to pay 1 player that kind of money. I mean what do you do! We have one of the best systems in baseball which didn't happen over night and most of the players are locked up with deals for the near future. I'm confident in management but if Dusty can't get this team over the hump I would think he's out.

TV deal is re worked in a couple of years and Arroyo, BPhil and Rolen all come off the books. The money will be there.

The Reds barely even market phillips. They market Votto a lot more heavily than Phillips. Votto has his own cereal for crying out loud. Phillips doesnt even have a bobblehead day this year.

The reds are based around Votto. An MVP caliber ELITE player.

If I remember, that is how it shakes out.

Plus by then Arroyo will be gone, Rolen will be gone, Marshall will just be coming off the books...we will have the money for them.
