They need to get away from the 'two series for the starter, third series for the backup, Leonard on third down and late' mentality that they've had. I'm sure most of that has been because of Ced. If they work on the rotation, it could be ok. But i'd prefer someone other than BJGE as the "main" ball carrier.
Thing is, you have to take into account what having bad Guards does to a running game. And our guards last year were worse than just bad - they were horrible. I submit that the improvement in going from Livings and McGlynn to Wharton and Zeitler is enormous.

With the vastly improved interior line, having a rotation of backs has a much better chance of success. Ellis is actually well suited to being the "main" back because he runs very well inside and is also VERY good at both blitz pickup and simple pass blocking. This means we can design and use pass plays out of a run formation and thus not tip everyone off like we have in the past (for example defenses were looking both at if Leonard was in and if Benson was how far behind the formation he set up and correctly guessing the play under Brat).

Leonard is still able to do what he has done, which is be clutch every time he gets the chance. He is still the third down back par excellence. Scott is the wild card. He has the quickness and burst to get to the edge and we now have the blockers to help him get there. But he needs to improve his game in pass protection. If he does that will be big and if he does not then he may be the odd man out.

And the combination of better Guards and a RB who is productive in short yardage (which BGE always has been) offers major hope of the goal line and 3rd and short no longer being nightmares for us. Remember last year where our poor Guard play and Benson (for whatever reason) not having the nose for the down marker like he did before meant we were forced to be pass happy because we could not run in those situations - the EXACT situation a good offense has to be able to run in.

And I still think you might be giving them too much credit

Please bring in Bobby Rainey.

If we're going RB-by-committee, it wouldn't hurt to have another RB battle it out for a spot on the roster.

There was talk of a degenerative injury/illness...I have no idea what they are referring to..he got hurt his freshman yr...shoulder injury...played 38 straight games after...but if the FO and war rooms get wind of injuries or certain hints of durability it can be looked at as much worse than character issues

This is a great post..... Well said. I really like the points made about the Guard play, BJGE & Leonard's clutch 3rd down play. I also think this assemblance of WRs will have to get it done this year if the Bengals have any shot to win a playoff game. AJ & Gresh will have to keep doing what they do, but Sanu, Shipley, Hawkins, & Jones will have to step their games up as well. I do think the interior Oline upgrades will go a long way in making that happen as well.

We were very bad in short yardage and goal line situations a year ago. We showed no ability to get a 3rd and 1 or a first and goal inside the five by running the ball.

Hopefully, that is an area that will show significant improvement in 2012 with new guards and a better Smith as well as Green- Ellis.

I think the Mays pick is next years seventh rounder....I could be wrong though. I'm not really sure why they didn't have a seventh this year.
